Here is what Quarts de Chaume actually IS. The Loire Valley is France’s longest wine river. Hundreds of appellations. Thousands of producers. And exactly ONE Grand Cru. This is it. 43 hectares total on the planet. Florent Baumard farms 15 of those acres on a steep terraced hillside of schist, limestone, quartz and volcanic rock. The peasants would be FURIOUS at this price. 😁

And the name? By LAW, medieval peasants farming this hillside surrendered a quarter of their harvest to the lord. Not any quarter. The BEST quarter. The ripest fruit. The most concentrated juice from the most coveted slope in the Loire. That tradition IS the name. Quarts de Chaume.

2018 was a nearly perfect vintage. No spring frosts. Dense concentration and juicy acidity locked in together. Decanter says “drink through 2043.” This wine is JUST getting started!!

Pale gold and impossibly youthful. White flower explosion on the nose, citrus zest underneath, lush electric palate with richness and acidity pushing against each other, long honeyed finish that just keeps going. We kept sniffing the empty glass. ✨ Loire Chenin Blanc at this level is hands down crown jewel territory.
