Today’s wine is, itself, a Secret Agent. A 96 Point BEAST that is well worthy of its full retail.

But today, for… what’s that? UNDER $30?! Our own Agent’s will be stocking up on this one!

Trust us, it masquerades as a humble, entry level GSM. But it’s NOT! When we popped the cork last week, it was obvious – this is something special! It crackles with raw, feral power. Overflowing with smoked meat and peppery flavors, crunchy tannins, and a jaw-dropping finish. If the most interesting man in the world were a wine, it would be this.

A quick search revealed why – at a scant 3% Grenache and 2% Mourvèdre, this wine should really be called what it is… SYRAH!

Not just any Syrah – it’s primarily fruit from the two flagship single-vineyard sites that produce their 96 Point Perli and 100 Point Valenti Syrah. Oh, and it’s a FRACTION of the price of those wines!

That is, if you can even find them. Most of Drew’s wines are ultra-rare Wine Club Exclusives, and they have a waitlist for allocations. And while you can find this (cough) “GSM” elsewhere, this is BY FAR the lowest price for this “lively, textured, electric” 96 Pointer!

You see, Jason Drew has quickly establishing himself as one of the great up-and-coming winemakers. Jeb Dunnuck explains, “One of the most highly acclaimed producers in Mendocino County, Drew Wines was started by Jason and Molly Drew in 2000 on a 26-acre apple orchard in the Mendocino Ridge AVA, high above the Anderson Valley and just 3.3 miles from the ocean at 1,250-feet elevation. There they took a chance on growing cool-climate heritage field selections of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, calling the eight-acre estate Faite De Mer Farm.”

And his resumé reads like a who’s-who of legendary winemakers. Dunnuck expands, “Jason trained with winemakers Craig Williams at Joseph Phelps, John Kongsgaard at Luna, Jeff Baker at Carmenet, Cathy Corison of Corison, and Brian Babcock of Babcock Vineyards before devoting himself full-time to living and working in Mendocino, where he uses traditional methods like whole cluster and native yeast fermentations and doesn’t fine or filter the wines.”

Antonio Galloni of Vinous agrees these are serious wines, adding “This is another fine collection of wines from Jason Drew. I admire these wines for their delineation, energy and translucence, qualities readers will find in spades in the 2023s. The cool, late-ripening year is especially well suited to the house style.”

96 Points – Jeb Dunnuck “An 85% Syrah-based wine, co-fermented with Viognier, the 2023 Field Blend GSM comes from the excellent Perli and Valenti vineyards, Valenti in particular providing the Grenache and Mourvèdre. The grapes were 80% whole-cluster fermented, and the resulting medium-bodied wine dazzles in the glass in shocks of white pepper, pink fruit, and purple plum. This is a lively, textured, electric, and energetic wine that’s elegant and light on its feet, drinking so well right now, but it’s got the legs to go another 10-12 years. Drink 2026-2038.”
