“If I were obscenely wealthy and money no object, I would have poured Château Margaux at my wedding party for all 200 guests.” – Neal Martin, Vinous
Hmm, let’s see, Bordeaux legends on Wine Spies? Petrus? Check! Cheval Blanc? Yep. All the 1st Growths as in Lafite, Latour, Mouton, Haut-Brion… WAIT, are we missing ONE?
Not anymore!!! Our very first Château Margaux, and perhaps we saved the best for last?
Given it’s a 1995 - with 100 points - that would be an accurate statement!
Nothing ages like a Latour, and a Lafite can make you cry with endless grace. Haut-Brion takes minerality to new heights, and Mouton does flamboyance justice. But a Château Margaux, per The Wine Cellar Insider, “at its best, blends elegance, purity of fruit, harmony, and finesse” in a truly singular way.
You know what else is singular? The number of bottles we were able to curate!
100 Points – Wine Spectator “Dark color. Black licorice, coffee, currants and black olives. Complex nose. A full-bodied, chewy blockbuster of a wine that is not giving anything at all away. It is like buried treasure still; you have to search for the gold. And it’s there. Fabulous. Please give this time. This still broods seriously, with dark plum, currant and blackberry fruit, studded with charcoal, singed tobacco and cedar notes and backed by a serious grip of roasted earth. The gorgeously long finish is driven by old-school tannins, with the smoldering edge going on and on. Drink now through 2034.”
99 Points – Decanter “Caramel, sweet strawberries and a hint of herbaceous Cabernet tones on the nose. Smooth, sensual and light almost - a delicacy to the frame but still with trademark detail so you get nuance and concentration but not so much overt power. This retains a supple character though with an enjoyable succulence of cherry and blackberry fruit. Supremely charming, refined and pure and still with a determination to the flavours - driving and focused. Pure class and a joy to drink. 3% Cabernet Franc completes the blend. Drink 2022-2040.”
