Mission Codename MSM660
Wait up, CRAZY DAY!
We HAD to have some stupid white Burgundy deal or three in there, and if I had to pick one that stomps all, THIS IS IT.
Fun fact: only 3 other vignerons made a white from Beaune’s prized Champs Pimont Premier Cru. They cost more than this; we did our homework, and right under $90, it’s a STEAL that drinks like a Premier Cru from Meursault that would cost you thrice more.
Real special terroir here, per top importer Frederick Wildman, it’s “A large plot with the evocative name of “Les Champs au pied du Mont” (or “The Fields at the Foot of the Mountain”), located on the slope overlooking the outskirts of Beaune. This vineyard, facing due east, produces both red and white wine. Chardonnay is planted on the upper part of the slope with chalky soil that gives its mineral characteristics and unique personality. There is also often a salty flavor on the aftertaste.”
New to the Domaine? Per Wine Advocate, “since 1989, the Guy Amiot has catapulted to the top echelon of quality. For Inside Burgundy, Jasper Morris adds that *“As well as their terrific range of Chassagne-Montrachet premier cru vineyards, they are fortunate enough to enjoy further white- wine vineyards outside Chassagne in superb locations.”
It’s fairly simple in Burgundy: great site in the hands of a great grower, in a great vintage = BUY!
91 Points – Burghound “Fabrice Amiot noted that the “2022 growing season was so much easier than its 2021 counterpart. It was certainly hot and dry but there was basically no disease pressure of importance, and thus we were able to plan the harvest with more precision and tranquility than usual… As to the wines, they’re riper than the 2021s but remain classic in style with fine terroir transparency. They should drink well both young and with age as the balance is so good.” Fans of the Domaine will note the presence of several new wines, including the Beaune 1er Champs Pimont. Prominent, if still reasonably unobtrusive wood frames aromas of pear confit, crushed fennel, and lemon-lime wisps. The caressing middleweight flavors possess a fine, dense mouthfeel while displaying sneaky good length on the balanced finale where the wood treatment reappears. Drink 2028+.”
