Mission Codename Unfair advantage
Going Deep Cover the right way on a Barrett Tuesday: Decade-plus-aged library trophy!!!
At a price we’ve never seen one of these by the way, and for the record, this is a genuine steal. As per Robert Parker “Not many bottles of these are made from Heidi and Bo Barrett’s vineyard in Calistoga. It is a 4-acre parcel, and they produce 300-350 cases from the dry-farmed Cabernet vineyard planted with the To Kalon clone of Cabernet Sauvignon.”
Therefore, few even know it even exists. Arguably the most DANGEROUS collaboration project in all of Napa Valley, between Bo Barrett of Chateau Montelena, and Heidi Barrett of, well, you know…
Too bad they make very little, and therefore very, VERY few insiders scoop it all up in record time.
So here is how this wine came about, per Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate “Bo and Heidi Barrett have turned out fabulous Cabernet Sauvignons. Readers may recall the Barretts started their own label when it looked like Château Cos d’Estournel was about to purchase Chateau Montelena a few years ago. That transaction never closed, but it did result in the creation of this impressive new project.”
And Antonio Galloni’s Vinous adds: “Heidi Barrett describes Barrett & Barrett as bringing together Bo’s approach to farming and her work in the cellar, but in my view, the wines don’t really resemble anything either of them is making elsewhere. In fact, as I tasted these wines all I could think about is why the Montelena Cabernets and Heidi Barrett’s other wines aren’t at this level. The Barrett & Barrett Cabernet is made predominantly from a parcel of dry-farmed vines on Toll Road in Calistoga now Jericho Canyon plus Saunders in Oakville, which is the source of the Cabernet Franc… These wines are terrific.”
What else can we say but that this is exactly what you need for that special night ahead. Did we already say that at this price, we’re almost giving these away?!
97 Points – Jeb Dunnuck “98% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Cabernet Franc from their estate vineyard in Calistoga, the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon has a bouquet of blackcurrants, toasted spices, smoke tobacco, and lead pencil in its Bordeaux-ish (Pauillac even) bouquet. Beautifully concentrated, full-bodied, and layered on the palate, it has good acidity, notable tannic structure, and a great finish. A classic, focused, structured wine, it needs 4-5 years of bottle age and will shine over the following two decades. Drink 2024-2040.”
