Mission Codename Big gun
“In my opinion, some of the best Côtes-du-Rhône and Châteauneuf-du-Pape are crafted here.” – Wine Advocate
Happy Bastille Day!
With THREE Châteauneuf-du-Pape superstar deals. One of those “brilliant wines readers will love to have in their cellars” per Jeb Dunnuck.
Sign me up, Jeb! The one, the only: Le Clos du Caillou, and we even have their Rayas-buster La Réserve CdP in da house. 97-98 points on this flagship, while Le Clos du Caillou sits in a pantheon alongside some of the best Châteauneuf-du-Pape producers.
Our price (lowest anywhere, thanks to 47% off) makes it a no-brainer for anyone serious about Rhône wines - or just wants to experience truly world-class Châteauneuf for less.
Going back to 1895, this former hunting preserve proved to have some of the finest terroir in all of the appellation, farmed organically and biodynamically. Vinous says; “Longtime winemaker Bruno Gaspard and the Vacheron family are producing some of the finest wines in the entire Rhône Valley.”
The La Réserve Châteauneuf-du-Pape is sourced from estate lieu-dits ‘La Guigasse’ and ‘Pignan,’ with mostly sandy soils, with vines aged 75 years on the average. The resulting wine is a strikingly pure and elegant yet intense and deep expression of one of France’s most heralded appellations. While you can enjoy the Côtes-du-Rhône cousin of this from just over the appellation boundaries early, it’s advisable that this collectible sees at least a few years of cellaring to reach a peak well worth the wait.
No need to state that there’s precious little to spare and time is fleeting.
98 Points – The Wine Cellar Insider “Black cherries, orange rind, flowers, smoke, licorice, and herbs shine with a single swirl in the perfume. Lush, rich, ripe, remarkably pure, deep, elegant, and fresh, this stunner is once again one of the wines of the vintage, and deservedly so. The wine is produced from a blend of 60% Grenache and 40% Mourvèdre. Drink from 2027-2045.”
97 Points – Wine Advocate “Crafted from vines rooted in sandy soils, the 2023 Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Réserve is a compelling marriage of elegance and power. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of cherries, wild berries, peonies, crushed strawberries and exotic spices, it is medium- to full-bodied, round and juicy, with an enveloping core of fruit, velvety tannins and a long, lively and delicate finish. A blend of 60% Grenache Noir and 40% Mourvèdre, matured for 14 months in a mix of used barrels (40%) and large foudres, this is not the most extroverted wine in the range, but it is undoubtedly one destined for the cellar. Drink 2028-2048.”
