Mission Codename Mâcon it happen
“There are unquestionably wines produced in the Mâconnais today that equal the renowned wines of the Côte d’Or and Chablis.” – Decanter
For those of us that LOVE white Burgundy, there is usually one sticking point – the price.
Enter this little darling. AT UNDER $30, it delivers the precision, freshness, and complexity we love, priced to enjoy anytime!
As Decanter points out, “Although their style is different from what one finds further north, lovers of white Burgundy who appreciate value absolutely need to know the Mâconnais well.”
For those new to this piece of Burgundy, there is real value to be found. The Mâconnais is the name for the larger area south of the Côte d’Or and Côte Chalonnaise – a stunningly beautiful region of rolling hills and gorgeous vineyards.
The most famous village in this area is Pouilly-Fuissé. They used to be hidden gems with great QPR. But unfortunately, the wines of Pouilly-Fuissé are starting to trade at famous prices.
But fear not! There are still untapped pockets of greatness. Pouilly-Loché, lays just to the east, centered on the village of Loché. It is similar to Pouilly-Fuissé in more than name, stylistically provides comparable quality, for fewer bills.
Gilles Noblet, locally in France, is one of the best regarded producers in the Mâconnais. Since 1927 their family has championed this region. But very little of their wine leaves the region. Little press. No scores. Just great wine.
While they’re best known for Pouilly-Fuissé, again, herein lies the value. His Pouilly-Loché comes from the same domaine, the same hands, the same old-vine/low-yield philosophy – but from the quieter appellation next door. Same grower, same care, smarter price.
2022 is one of the best recent Mâconnais vintages. The ripe, sunny, and hedonistic, yet balanced character is immediately obvious when you pour yourself a glass. A brilliant lemon-gold color, it has a plump mouthfeel, but balanced by plenty of underlying freshness. Finishing with plenty of minerality and a hint of toasted vanilla, it ticks all the boxes for white Burgundy.
And at this price? No need for a special occasion. Whether with poulet rôti, Branzino, grilled vegetables, or on its own as an aperitif, it’s brilliant.
But as we mentioned – very little of it makes its way our of the region. STOCK UP, NOW!
