From the brilliantly colorful label art (they collaborate with Dolce&Gabbana, hello?) of a maiden with windswept hair to the copper-pink color and ultra-fine bubbles, everything about it screams class. Effervescent red fruit, zesty lemon, toasted bread, and wildflower aromas fill the nose. Bright and super crisp, the palate is bone-dry, with a long and complex finish that ties together the flavors of raspberry, citrus, and pastry flavors with a hint of earth.

We were stunned. While there’s nothing quite like great Champagne, taste this and you’ll see… It’s just as great, only different.

“Donnafugata,” Vinous reports, “ranks among the largest estates of Sicily, and yet the level of quality across the board is remarkably high. When you add to that some very attractive labels and marketing, such as their partnership with Dolce and Gabbana, it easy to see why they are so popular.”

We can attest to that. Their sweet whites from Pantelleria are legendary, and their dry reds are fantastic across the board.

But we had no idea they made Sparkling Wine. Nor that it would be SOOOOO GOOD!

The Rallo family founded the winery in 1983. The name, Donnafugata, ‘woman in flight’, is a reference to Queen Maria Carolina flight from Naples to avoid Napolean’s army, taking refuge in the hills where they farm. It is famously detailed in Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa’s famous novel Il Gatopardo.

Since their founding they’ve exploded across Sicily with several estate vineyards. Crafted from 100% Pinot Noir, this Sparkling Rosé hails from, “343 hectares of vines in Contessa Entellina across 10 contrade (local subdivisions) in the villages of Sambuca di Sicilia and Santa Margherita Belice.” according to Wine Advocate
