2022 ran warm down in the valley, sure. But up at 2,200 feet on the back side of Mount Veeder? That heat becomes an advantageous EDGE. Retaining acidity, aromatics, fruit and structure just dialed in perfectly.

Random Ridge is a true insiders-only, old school winery, with relaxed family vibes. Bill planted this rugged volcanic property in 1979 with a total Walden vibe. He built his own house out of recycled lumber and has been quietly cranking out killer Cabs for almost 30 years.

This is the same mountainous ridge that grows fruit for Mayacamas, Promontory, and Lokoya. Names that routinely command $150 to $500+ a bottle.

Bill’s Reserve runs $100 at the winery and nowhere else. It was a no-brainer of the highest order. Umm, yeah, we’ll take it.

Bill hasn’t sent a sample to a critic in years. There’s just not enough juice to spare. No fresh score to flash here.

Just pure Mount Veeder, doing what Mount Veeder does. But in a past tasting, Robert Parker raved about the “excellent winemaking”.

In the glass: dark cherry, blackberry, and red currant crash in first, backed by bay leaf and a streak of pencil graphite. Cocoa and sweet fruit ride on top of serious, structured tannins, with that unmistakable high-elevation snap running straight through the middle.

Give it an hour to open up or stash it a year or two. It only builds. It just keeps GOING, long and steady, straight off that wind-cut ridge.
