Why? Andy Beckstoffer. His henchmen may be scouring the land for us. We’ve done it again! A $200 bottle, not just a Beckstoffer Heritage Vineyard, but a Single Block – selling for over $120 off?!

Man, I knew we shouldn’t have put that “Top Secret HQ” sign out front of the office…

If you like your massive Cabernet with a purebred pedigree, look no further.

When we tasted this wine at HQ, there was no denying. We had to find a way to share this wine with our dearest Operatives. Inky purple and as dense as a neutron star. As plush as crushed velvet, it delivers waves of black and purple fruit with a muscular intensity befitting its thick, viscous frame. It is over-the-top in the best possible way. More is more, and we can’t get enough!

Nobody stumbles into a Beckstoffer Heritage contract. You earn it. Located right next to Caymus, Beckstoffer Georges III Vineyard was originally planted way back in 1895 by Elizabeth Yount Rutherford (yes, that Yount and that Rutherford). Later, Georges de Latour (of Beaulieu Vineyards fame) purchased it in 1928 and soon tended by none other than the legendary André Tchelistcheff. Today the famous site in Rutherford breeds some of the world’s top Cabs. Prices routinely soar well above $200 (…Myriad - $225,Vice Versa - $300, Realm - $350, Schrader - $380+).

But this isn’t just the story of GIII. From within the 300-acre site, Block G is a parcel just over 5-acres – selected for its depth of alluvial soils along the Western edge of the property that encourage the vines to produce super-dense fruit, as well as for being planted exclusively to Clone 4, renown for its lush texture and richly concentrated flavors.

Of course, you need a heavyweight winemaker to handle this caliber of fruit. Enter Maayan Koschitzky. Former paratrooper. Black belt in judo. First Napa job rhymes with Dreaming Beagle. Then Dalla Valle. Then becoming Director of Winemaking at Atelier Melka.

The Taubs earned their place here before they even had a label, locking in contracts to Missouri Hopper AND Georges III in 2012, a full year before the winery officially existed. This is a four-generation wine family who knows how to identify the next great thing before anyone else does. Beckstoffer gives their Heritage Vineyard contracts to those they know will elevate the fruit and honor the site.

After a couple of vintages, Marc Taub went even further. A single vineyard expression of Georges III wasn’t enough. He developed a passion for the different blocks and clones of the vineyard and zoned in on Block G specifically. Wine Advocate praises wines made from this vineyard by Taub as “The richest yet also most balanced and complete of the Taub Family offerings,” and this Block G bottling includes the best barrels from the heart of that same site. AND it’s never been released en masse.

Pour a glass of this midnight-black ambrosia, and you’ll understand. You just can’t find a wine of this richness, heritage, and pedigree for less than $100, except occasionally at Wine Spies, of course.
