Mission Codename Limestone Cowboy 🤠

Burgundy nuts, you’ve seen this family name before. Marey-Monge. $60 under asking. Double 94 Points

In 1791, Nicolas-Joseph Marey bought the entire Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru after the Revolution. His family held on to it for generations, leased the last of it to Domaine de la Romanée-Conti in 1966, and DRC finally bought it outright in 1988. That same family built a château inside the walls of this vineyard in Pommard. Its name? Clos Marey-Monge. 🕵️

For years, you almost never saw these bottles out in the wild. As Burgundy Report wrote, “The domaine’s wines are sold only at the château and shipped directly…” They were very rare.

Times have changed since then. New owners purchased the estate in 2014 and converted the farming to Demeter certified biodynamic, and Decanter just named Château de Pommard one of 8 producers leading Pommard’s winemaking renaissance in an article from September 2026. Only 614 cases of Grands Esprits were made in 2022.

Once sold only at the Château or shipped straight from the winery; now a small amount makes it to the States, but they’re still hard to come across in this big sea of Burgundy lovers.

The entire 20-hectare walled Clos is now certified organic, too. Grands Esprits comes from vines planted between 1970 and 1980 on rocky, limestone-rich soils. The Château calls it the parcel that gives body and structure to its flagship Monopole. It’s 30% whole cluster and spends 15 months in French oak.

2022 was one of the warmest years on record, and this wine still comes across fresh. It was also a year of firsts at the Château: Jean-Rémi Fray made his debut as vineyard manager, and Paul Négrerie took the helm for his first full vintage as head winemaker. Coincidence? We’ll let you decide. 😏

James Suckling found red cherries, minerals and tangy raspberries. Jamie Goode called it “bold but really silky” and summed it up simply: “Finesse and elegance here.” Over at Wine Spectator, they noted it opens rich before the tannins take over, so patience pays: “Best from 2028 through 2042.”

Now for our take. Pure glee! 🍷 Roasted strawberry and confectioned red and dark fruit come flying out of the glass, and that fruit never lets up, first sip to last. Morello cherry and baking spice fill the middle with real concentration. It’s more fruit-forward than Pommards from cooler years, but firm and classic tannins pay off, providing the structure this village is famous for! It is showy up front, but has the old-school backbone underneath, and it all stays beautifully balanced.

It’s Modern Burgundy with old world charm at 50% OFF

94 Points - James Suckling ”Smoothness and depth with vivid highlights of fruit and spices on a medium body. Limestone soil lends a sharp, focused palate alive with red cherries, minerals and tangy raspberries that are pretty and complex. Aged in 20% new oak. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Drink now or hold.”

94 Points - Jamie Goode, Wine Anorak ”Plantings from 1970-1980 on rocky calcareous soils. Sweetly aromatic on the nose with red cherry, some sweet strawberry and fine herbs. The palate is bold but really silky, ripe and quite softly structured with easy, floral fruit, showing a subtle mulchy hint on the finish. Finesse and elegance here.”
