Mission Codename On top of the world
“I was quite impressed with the wines I tasted from Antica, the Antinori family’s Atlas Peak estate… they are beautifully done and just delicious.” - Antonio Galloni
Looks like someone had a few too many last Friday and forgot to link to the sale when we sent this a few days ago. The fix is in, the link working, and this gorgeous specimen can be yours for WAY under the $220 release price.
And they’re only getting better! Today’s DOUBLE AGENT is a real stunner.
The flagship Napa Cabernet from possibly the oldest winemaking family in the world, Double 96 Points, and today you can tuck OVER A HUNDRED AND THIRTY BUCKS back in your pocket.
JUST $88?! This is the best price for this wine anywhere. And by a wide margin!
Anyone into fine wine knows the Antinori family well. Still, few know of their Napa Valley investment, formerly call Antica. But while they seem like newcomers, they have been in the valley for decades. Trust us, this estate one to watch closely. Their ideals of global excellence are on full display, both here, and in their recent full takeover of the historic Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars!
But let’s step back to the beginning. OVER 600 YEARS AGO! Seriously, their 25th generation, the legendary Piero Antinori, is currently handing over the reins to the 26th, his three daughters Albiera, Allegra, and Alessia. They’ve made and sold wine through the Black Death, Hundred Years War, Ottoman Empire, Renaissance… To say that they are long-term thinkers is a massive understatement.
Catching up to more modern times – it was in 1966 that Piero Antinori first traveled to California to visit his friend Robert Mondavi. He knew instantly he wanted a vineyard in Napa Valley.
(Could it have been this visit that inspired Antinori to break with tradition and make one of the first Super Tuscans, Tignanello, in 1971? Or the Cabernet Sauvignon based Solaia in 1978? Both with more 100 Point scores than we have time to count!)
Fast forward nearly two decades, and in 1985 he invested in a massive property high up in the Atlas Peak AVA. A hidden valley onto itself, only 10 miles (mostly uphill) from Napa, but it’s stunning vistas and vertiginous slopes feel a world away. The Townsend Vineyard came a little later, in 1998, when he purchased the neighboring 40 acres poking over the west facing side of the ridge whose afternoon sunlight and exposure above the fog line is absolutely perfect for Cabernet Sauvignon.
It instantly became their flagship bottling for the variety!
In the few decades since Antinori has built out a fully modern winery and caves, visitors center, and invested heavily in the region, all eyes on long term success. A vision that pays dividends in a great vintage like 2021. “The 2021s are aromatic, refined and wonderfully expressive. I found many wines to be truly exceptional both in terms of quality and what seems to be a more finessed approach than in the past, something that is evident at many estates.” waxes Vinous about the quality. They go on to note for this wine that, “The sleek, polished style seems to represent a new era for Antinori in Napa Valley.”
If you aren’t looking to cellar the wine, we recommend decanting it like we did. This brooding beast needs a little time to unwind, but your patience will be rewarded with richly complex black and blue fruits, warming exotic spices, vanilla, and flourishes of earth and violets. Powerful, but also nuanced, the concentrated fruit of the palate is matched with savory mountain herbs and highlighted by toasted oak.
If you are thinking of something for the cellar, this will be absolutely singing in a decade plus! FOR UNDER $90!
The kind of deal you can only find here. If the Antinoris find out, it may not happen again. STOCK UP NOW!
96 Points – Decanter “The Townsend is still a baby as of July 2025, brimming with tension and coiled energy. Aromas of sagebrush and graphite carry through to the palate, where inky dark-berry fruit—mulberry, black cherry, and blueberry—unfolds with depth. Superfine tannins, edged with a chocolaty quality, build momentum across the full-bodied palate, finishing with mineral length and generosity. For now, it remains taut and will require time in the cellar to unwind. Drink 2025-2038.”
96 Points – James Suckling “A perfumed and refined nose of cherries, raspberries and plums with some violets and mild spices. Medium to full body with fine, firm tannins which give structure to the intense mid-palate full of spices and wild currants. Layered and textured. Give it time. Try after 2026.”
95+ Points – Vinous “The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Townsend is Antinori’s top wine from their property on Atlas Peak. Still tightly coiled, the 2021 offers up an exotic mélange of graphite, new leather, espresso, mocha, blackberry and violet. I would give this potent, savory mountain Cabernet a few years in bottle. The sleek, polished style seems to represent a new era for Antinori in Napa Valley. Drink 2028-2041.”
