(Be sure to check out their other 95 Pointer as well!)
Priorat as a region is one of the bastions of quality within Spain. But it’s kind of a contradiction. You see, it impossibly steep rocky slopes are home to some seriously old vines, and it’s been making wine since at least the 12th century. BUT it didn’t make it to the world stage until the late 1980’s, when René Barbier convinced a group of investors to buy vineyards. While some of these first wineries (like Clos Mogador, Finca Dofi, Clos Erasmus) now routinely command $125-$350 a bottle, there are still great pockets of value to be found.
Enter Albert Jané. From the nearby region of Montsant, he started Ritme Celler in 2010, and has been quietly buying up some of the best old-vine sites in the area ever since. And he’s acquired quite the portfolio – farming around 50 acres, with 35 acres of that as estate fruit. For this wine, the vines are so old they produce super-concentrated fruit in such little quantity that it takes 3-4 vines to yield JUST ONE bottle!
‘Etern’ means eternal in Catalan. It’s the perfect name for this wine because it goes on and on and on… unfurling layer after layer of complexity and textural depth. The fruit is super-concentrated as the old vines would suggest, full of rich black and blue fruits, meaty and smokey notes, spice, and all the hallmarks of Priorat. But there is graceful beauty to it as well, with delicate violet, wild herb, sage aromas and a poised polish to the mouthfeel. And the finish goes on, and on… The net effect is mesmerizing. Brilliant now, but this is definitely one for the cellar, where your patience will be duly rewarded with even MORE DEPTH.
It’s a knockout. Both of their wines we have today are a revelation. But where the younger-vined ‘Plaer’ is a charging Bull, the ‘Etern’ is the agile Matador.
And now it’s up to you. Today ONLY $65! A small price to discover new pleasures.
96 Points – Jeb Dunnuck “The 2022 Etern Vinyes Velles Molt Velles Costers is a field blend of 75% Carinyena and 25% Garnatxa from vines planted in slate soils between 1920 and 1940. Made in small amounts, it’s highly structured, savory, and well-integrated, with a smooth texture, plenty of complexity, and wisdom. Give it another five or so years to settle down and enjoy best from 2030 to 2042.”
