Mission Codename Old School
Library vintage Pinot from one of the ALL-TIME GREATS. Seriously.
Dr. Richard ‘Dick’ Peterson is a LEGEND in the industry. At 95-years-young, he’s still making wine! The longevity of today’s Pinot Noir, available today at HALF OFF – it’s a testament to his skills acquired over his looooong career.
That’s right – 50% OFF Pinot with NEARLY A DECADE of maturity! And like the man himself, it just keeps getting better with age!!!
If you’ve not heard of Dr. Peterson, you’ve probably heard of Screaming Eagle and Heidi Barrett. Get this - before Heidi came on board it was her dad, Dr. Peterson who led the first four vintages of Screaming Eagle into cult stardom. Then Heidi Barrett took over. That’s not all.
Peterson also took André Tchelistcheff’s post at Beaulieu Vineyards, helped develop Atlas Peak Vineyards, and he presided over numerous institutions including the American Society for Enology & Viticulture, The Wine Institute, Society of Wine Educators and American Institute for Wine and Food. Oh, and he wrote an award-winning autobiography “The Winemaker”.
He even invented the steel barrel racks that most wineries use to this day, around the world, to stack their barrels while the precious liquid inside patiently matures. And he gave the design away to the wine industry, FOR FREE!
With close to 70 harvests under his belt, it’s not an exaggeration to say he is a unique wealth of knowledge. Old school in all the best ways.
Enter this Pinot Noir. Made in collaboration with John Schwartz, longtime partner of Peterson’s daughter Heidi, it comes from his property in the Santa Lucia Highlands. The vineyard’s cool climate boasts one of the longest growing seasons in California, allowing for slow and steady development of intensely flavorful Pinot Noir. Peterson is also a pioneer in the Wrotham clone, known for its powerfully rich and spicy flavors and thought to date back 2000 years to Roman times. And he’s the only one in California growing it.
We aren’t going to lie – we were so excited when we saw this bottle at HQ that we opened it right away!
The nose is delicate, light, and expressive as great Pinot should be. While it still shows plenty of strawberry and raspberry fruit, developing notes of lightly cured tobacco, dried violets, and exotic spices show the wine’s poise and maturity. It’s beautifully defined on the palate, with satiny suppleness to the tannins, a light airy mouthfeel, and lingering savory finish that goes on… and on… and on…
Like the man himself, this wine is a piece of living history.
But we weren’t able to secure that many bottles. Grab them while you can!
