Mendocino Wine Company
2006 Zig Zag Cabernet Sauvignon
California: Mendocino County
Zig then Zag
Today’s 2006 Zig Zag Cabernet Sauvignon is a lovely follow-up to one of our best-selling Chardonnays from the budget-friendly Zig Zaggers.
This delightful treat is an easy-drinking wine with plenty of character for its relatively low price. The wine has a rich and savory nose while delivering rich, concentrated fruits on the palate.
If you are looking for a Cabernet that won’t break the bank - and won’t bore you to tears, like so many inexpensive Cabs do - this wine is sure to please. Decant for best results and be sure to squirrel some away for the fall and winter holidays.
Dark and slightly opaque with dark purple hues at the core. At the edges, dark garnet hues run a chubby ring around the glass.
Briar patch and blackberry compote meld with dark tobacco, braised plum, smoky cherry and baking spice.
Dried black currant, pomegranate, dried cranberry, plum skin, grilled nectarine and dark spice.
Dark fruits gradually give way as softly plush tannin spreads a gradual dryness across the entire palate.
Enjoy this wine with teriyaki spareribs. For dessert, enjoy with grilled peach or grilled nectarine, served with a dollop each of vanilla ice cream and mascarpone.
What the Winery Says
About the Winery
Mendocino Wine Co. purchased Parducci Wine Cellars, Mendocino’s oldest winery, in April 2004. Respecting the heritage of Parducci and the central role the winery has played in the development of Mendocino County’s wine industry, the new owners created a strategy to build on Parducci’s strengths and successes, especially its people. The partners are fully committed to the well-being of Mendocino County – the land, growers, employees and the community as a whole.
These goals are reflected in their sustainability E3 action plan: “economics, environment and social equity.” The partners and their employees are immersed in responsible land stewardship, sustainable viticulture and business practices that yield superior grapes while preserving the environment and supporting local farmers.
Winemaker Bob Swain
Bob Swain earned his Enology degree in 1974 from California State University, Fresno. He began his professional career working for Gallo Wines in Livingston, California.
In 1979, Bob moved closer to his roots in Northern California, taking a position as Assistant General Manager at Numano Sake Brewery (now Takara Sake) in Berkeley. In 1981, he moved to Napa Valley to join prestigious Clos Du Val Winery as Cellar Master, working daily with founder/proprietor Bernard Portet.
In 1997, Bob joined Parducci as Winemaker and quickly began instituting an ultra-premium winemaking regimen, including adding several thousand small oak barrels for aging Parducci wines.
Bob has dedicated himself to crafting wines of character that truly express what makes Mendocino County, his home, special. In addition to winemaking and production, Bob also oversees the planting, farming and harvesting of Parducci’s estate vineyards and helps manages the winery’s relationships with its outside growers. Bob’s talent and dedication to excellence are reflected in the countless awards and accolades Parducci wines have won since his arrival.
