2010 Russian River Valley 50 Year Zinfandel
California: Sonoma County: Russian River Valley
Today’s incredible XYZ Winery 2011 Zinfandel was made by Ondine Chattan, who learned her Zin-making skills with the masters of California Zinfandel at Ridge Vineyards. This wine is the final vintage for the winery’s 50 year old vines wine. Subsequent vintages will be a blend of 25 year old and older vines.
Old vine Zinfandel can be such a treat, especially when done correctly. Zins made from old - or even ancient - vines represent the best possible way to experience the terroir or that special sense of place where a wine was born. Old vine Zins are often more complex and earthy, delivering secondary characteristics like minerality, dark spice and anise.
This very highly recommended wine is a must-have for any fan of great Zinfandel. This wine is exceptional on its own, but we’ll be enjoying our bottles with a very wide array of foods.
Deep, nearly opaque crimson at its heart, slightly mellowing to a lighter, red edge.
Well balanced and refined, with restrained dark fruit notes of black cherry and Satsuma plum intermixed with notes of a blackberry briar patch, white peppercorn, and limestone river rock.
A true Old Vine Zin, with a fantastic interplay of fruit, spice, and earth. Leads with juicy, fresh fruit flavors of red currant, strawberry, and cherry laid overtop spice notes of black pepper, clove, and vanilla bean, with the more earthy notes of river stone rounding out the palate.
Long and slightly drying, with the fresh fruit flavors slowly transitioning to lovely hints of spice and a slight minerality. At the very end, a hint of black pepper persists at the back of the palate.
Enjoy with a ratatouille or, for you carnivores out there, a pepper-encrusted ahi steak.
