2009 Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon
California: Sonoma County
Today’s outstanding 2009 Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon comes to us from the venerable Arrowood Vineyards & Winery. Founder Richard Arrowood is in many ways the founding father of Sonoma Cabernet, working exclusively in Sonoma County for over 45 years, including over 15 years as master winemaker at Chateau St. Jean.
Today’s 92 Point (Stephen Tanzer) wine is beautifully layered, with lush flavor after lush flavor leaping from the glass with each successive sip. If ever there was a wine that screamed for a perfectly grilled steak, today’s wine is it! The juicy fruit and subtle earthen flavors in today’s wine will pair beautifully with a charcoal-grill seared steak (our mouths are watering just thinking about it!).
Please accept our boldest recommendation for today’s outstanding Cabernet. Today’s Sonoma offering just may give the best of Napa a run for its money!
Bold, lush crimson, with slight flecks of magenta.
Heady and delightfully full aromas of bright red fruit, highlighted by dark cherry and strawberry, are quickly followed by eucalyptus, dried rose petals, cherry cola, sweet aged leather, and lightly roasted coffee bean.
Lush and very richly layered flavors abound in this wine, with dark fruit, spice, and earth each showing beautifully. Blackberry, dark cherry, and sweet plum join toasty oak, sweet vanilla bean, dark baking spices, saddle leather, cedar wood cigar box, cocoa powder, and hints of dried herbs to create one delicious flavor profile.
Smooth on entry, with well integrated tannins and lovely structure. The dark fruit notes linger, slowly giving way to lasting hints of subtle spice on the tip of the tongue.
Garlic and fresh herb dry rubbed hanger steak, grilled to perfection and served with homemade fingerling potato salad.
What the Winery Says
As with previous vintages, our 2009 Sonoma County Cabernet shines aromatically with rich, dark fruit and beautifully integrated notes of oak. As it opens up, there are layers of red berries, rose petals, black cherries, leather, mocha and mint. The palate is sleek and concentrated with dark fruit, spice, cola and cedar. The finish is framed by bright acids and big, juicy tannins.

About the Winery
Arrowood is 100% Sonoma. Our home vineyard and tasting room is located in the historic Sonoma Valley, a swath of land tucked between the Mayacamas and Sonoma Mountain ranges. Often described as a warm pocket in a cool region, this rolling AVA is particularly well suited to Cabernet Sauvignon, our signature wine.
Since 1986, we have been producing high-character wines from sustainably and organically farmed vineyards west of the Mayacamas Ridge. We also produce limited quantities of other noble varieties from some of Sonoma’s most acclaimed vineyards.
While we source wines throughout Sonoma County, we have found three specific AVAs where exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon converge: Sonoma, Knights and Alexander Valleys. By sourcing fruit from these three legendary locations, Arrowood wines showcase Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon at its very best.
Winemaker Kristina Werner
Kristina was born in San Diego, CA, but grew up mostly in the Midwest. She discovered her profound love of wine, particularly Barolo and Bordeaux blends, upon traveling throughout Western Europe. Academically, she first earned bachelor’s degrees as a double major in Biochemistry and Agricultural Economics at the University of Missouri. She then went on to complete the Masters of Science program in Viticulture and Enology at the University of California, Davis, in 2009.
To gain hands-on experience after graduating, Kristina worked harvests in New Zealand as well as stints at Niepoort Vinhos in Portugal and Bodega Caelum in Argentina. Returning to the States, she was a Harvest Intern at Vérité Winery in 2011, moved on to Stonestreet Winery in 2012 as the Viticultural Enologist, and was named the Assistant Winemaker there two years later.
She completed what can only be characterized as a meteoric rise in the wine industry by becoming the Winemaker at Arrowood Winery in 2015.
Kristina’s experience with Alexander Valley fruit prior to arriving at Arrowood cemented her passion for making high-end Bordeaux wines from challenging vineyards located at higher elevations in the region. She is committed to vineyard-focused winemaking, where wine balance and expression are achieved in the vineyard rather than by manipulation in the winery.
A belief that understanding of terroir, attention to detail, and ultimately intuition, best guides decisions is the foundation of her approach to winemaking. Her passion is for Bordeaux blends that are ageable, complex, and complete, and she most wants to make wine from a vineyard that she loves.
We are passionate about crafting the most distinctive Cabernet Sauvignon Sonoma County has to offer. For more than three decades, we’ve been sourcing grapes from throughout this uniquely diverse growing region, where terroir ranges from steep mountain slopes to lower-lying hillsides and benchlands.
Our experience in Sonoma County has allowed us to identify three AVAs where Cabernet Sauvignon takes on its most powerful terroir-driven expressions: Knights Valley, Alexander Valley, and Sonoma Valley.
