2009 Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon
California: Sonoma County
Today’s outstanding 2009 Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon comes to us from the venerable Arrowood Vineyards & Winery. Founder Richard Arrowood is in many ways the founding father of Sonoma Cabernet, working exclusively in Sonoma County for over 45 years, including over 15 years as master winemaker at Chateau St. Jean.
Today’s 92 Point (Stephen Tanzer) wine is beautifully layered, with lush flavor after lush flavor leaping from the glass with each successive sip. If ever there was a wine that screamed for a perfectly grilled steak, today’s wine is it! The juicy fruit and subtle earthen flavors in today’s wine will pair beautifully with a charcoal-grill seared steak (our mouths are watering just thinking about it!).
Please accept our boldest recommendation for today’s outstanding Cabernet. Today’s Sonoma offering just may give the best of Napa a run for its money!
Bold, lush crimson, with slight flecks of magenta.
Heady and delightfully full aromas of bright red fruit, highlighted by dark cherry and strawberry, are quickly followed by eucalyptus, dried rose petals, cherry cola, sweet aged leather, and lightly roasted coffee bean.
Lush and very richly layered flavors abound in this wine, with dark fruit, spice, and earth each showing beautifully. Blackberry, dark cherry, and sweet plum join toasty oak, sweet vanilla bean, dark baking spices, saddle leather, cedar wood cigar box, cocoa powder, and hints of dried herbs to create one delicious flavor profile.
Smooth on entry, with well integrated tannins and lovely structure. The dark fruit notes linger, slowly giving way to lasting hints of subtle spice on the tip of the tongue.
Garlic and fresh herb dry rubbed hanger steak, grilled to perfection and served with homemade fingerling potato salad.
What the Winery Says
As with previous vintages, our 2009 Sonoma County Cabernet shines aromatically with rich, dark fruit and beautifully integrated notes of oak. As it opens up, there are layers of red berries, rose petals, black cherries, leather, mocha and mint. The palate is sleek and concentrated with dark fruit, spice, cola and cedar. The finish is framed by bright acids and big, juicy tannins.

About the Winery
Arrowood is 100% Sonoma. Our home vineyard and tasting room is located in the historic Sonoma Valley, a swath of land tucked between the Mayacamas and Sonoma Mountain ranges. Often described as a warm pocket in a cool region, this rolling AVA is particularly well suited to Cabernet Sauvignon, our signature wine.
Since 1986, we have been producing high-character wines from sustainably and organically farmed vineyards west of the Mayacamas Ridge. We also produce limited quantities of other noble varieties from some of Sonoma’s most acclaimed vineyards.
While we source wines throughout Sonoma County, we have found three specific AVAs where exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon converge: Sonoma, Knights and Alexander Valleys. By sourcing fruit from these three legendary locations, Arrowood wines showcase Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon at its very best.
Winemaker Heidi von der Mehden
Heidi von der Mehden was born in San Francisco and grew up in Santa Rosa, California. She received a B.S. degree in Chemistry from Santa Clara University in 1997 and went on to teach high school chemistry in Tanzania, East Africa, while serving in the Peace Corps. When she returned to the U.S. and to Sonoma County, she decided to put her chemistry background to work in the wine industry.
She began working as a laboratory technician for Kenwood Vineyards during the harvest of 2000. She completed four harvests, working her way up to enologist. During this time she also took a sabbatical to work the 2002 vintage at Babich Winery in New Zealand.
In 2004, Heidi joined the team at Mauritson Winery as assistant winemaker, where she worked for three harvests making wine and overseeing many of the day-to-day activities of the winery. Heidi then joined Arrowood Winery in 2007 as associate winemaker and continued her education under wine master Richard Arrowood. She was named winemaker at Arrowood in 2010, where she crafted Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, among other varietals.
