The Art of Wine
Agent Red was able to get his hands on the last few cases of today’s Clos Pegase Winery 2009 Carneros Pinot Noir, but it won’t be enough.
Today’s single-vineyard Pinot comes from the winery’s Mitsuko’s Vineyard. The vineyard provides 365 rolling acres of pure Pinot heaven, with lush soil and breezy microclimates that are perfect for the varietal.
We offer today’s wine our highest recommendation, but please hurry - this Pinot is flying off the (digital) shelves!
Dark scarlet, with flecks of magenta through and through and a touch of a slight lightening as the wine edges toward the rim of the glass.
A delightful bouquet of dark cherry, red and black currants, dusty berry bramble, dried rose petal, subtle brown baking spices, sandalwood, and toasted vanilla bean.
Fresh berries lead the way on the palate, with boysenberry, blackberry, and raspberry showing through. These fresh fruit flavors are joined by summer briar patch, sweet tobacco leaf, lightly roasted coffee bean, touches of dried rosemary, and a faint hint of pomegranate herbal black tea.
A lovely blend of fresh fruit and subtle spice, today’s wine presents a slight note of cranberry as the flavors slowly fade away.
Grilled pork chop prepared with a fresh rosemary and garlic rub.
What the Winery Says
Our 2010 Mitsuko’s Vineyard Pinot Noir possesses aromas of fresh black and red cherries, and red mulberry framed by Darjeeling tea, and roasted hazelnuts. This vibrant wine is seamless with a silky mouthfeel.
Mitsuko’s Vineyard, named after Jan Shrem’s wife, is 365 acres in the Los Carneros appellation within the Napa Valley. The rolling land of this vineyard has a broad range of soil types, elevations, slopes, and aspects which create countless distinct microclimates.

About the Winery
The winemaking approach at Clos Pegase has been consistent since Jan Shrem founded the winery in 1984. The focus is on wines that are harmonious in every way, expressing the terrior of the estate vineyard where the grapes were grown. Careful crafting is used to accentuate the intricate delicacy of fruit rather than hide it behind overbearing winemaking techniques. We consider Clos Pegase to be in the tradition of the classic Napa style where wine balances with food in an elegant way.
Winemaker Richard Sowalsky
Richard has been the Winemaker at Clos Pegase since 2010. He relies on his extensive winemaking experience and a diverse educational background that includes enology, medicine, and the culinary arts to create estate wines of the highest quality. Before joining Clos Pegase, Richard was at Tetra and Expression Wine, both brands of Hill & Wollack Wine Estates. Prior to his tenure with Hill & Wollack, he spent two years as the winemaker at William Hill Estate and six years at Robert Mondavi Winery in Oakville as associate winemaker for the Bordeaux varieties. Before joining Mondavi, Sowalsky was a research enologist for Robert Mondavi’s Woodbridge Winery in Lodi, production assistant at Handley Cellars in Philo, California, and harvest assistant at Truchard Vineyards in Napa.
When asked about the winemaking process Richard states, “My approach to winegrowing begins as an intensive learning process in the vineyard. Then I adapt all of my winemaking to realize the full potential of each site in the finished wine.” This is the same spirit that Clos Pegase was founded on in 1984 and continues to drive us through today.
