Mission Briefing
99 Points and a Zin has won
We have tasted some pretty fantastic Zin’s coming out of Lodi recently, but today’s just might take the cake. Handcrafted from some of the oldest vines in Lodi, today’s Jessie’s Grove 2012 Westwind Old Vine Zinfandel is otherworldly delicious. Oh, and it happens to have a 99 Point score to boot.
Dark purple-red in the glass, today’s wine has a delightful truffle aroma paired with its rich red fruit notes. We loved how the palate finds a near-perfect balance between power and elegance. Today’s has tremendously rich flavors, but also just enough restraint so it’s not overpowering.
At under $27.99, we highly recommend you stock up on this fantastic wine. Cheers!
Tasting Profile
Look: | A deep, dark red-purple in the center of the glass, with almost a sanguine hue to it. |
---|---|
Smell: | A lush and quite elegant nose, with an earthen element that veers nearly to truffle territory. Dark raspberry and black cherry are framed against dried summer forest floor, black peppercorn, vanilla bean, cedar wood, and deep hints of sassafras. |
Taste: | A very complex and layered flavor profile that’s fruit driven but also presents robust notes of earth and spice. Braised cherry, mulberry, and red currant are laid overtop warm brown baking spices, dark chocolate, vanilla, fresh cedar wood shavings, dried briar patch, and a slight kick of peppercorn spice. |
Finish: | A stunningly delicious Zin, without any heat whatsoever. Silken on entry, the juicy fruit flavors linger through and through, with a slight kiss of molasses lingering as the finish slowly fades away. |
Pairing: | Sweet and spicy apricot-glazed pork and pineapple skewers, slightly charred over a charcoal grill. |
