Mission Briefing
The Great Divide
Today’s Watkins Family Winery 2008 Nuns Cliff Vineyard Sonoma Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a delightful high-elevation Cab from one of the hardest working winemakers in Sonoma County, Randall Watkins.
As the proprietor and winemaker of his namesake winery, Randall is charged with overseeing every aspect of the winery’s business. This meticulous attention to detail is clearly visible in his winemaking practices as well, with deliberate thought and care given to each step of the process. The resulting wine is bursting with flavor, with an elegant balance of fruit, structure, and tannin. We particularly enjoyed the signature high-elevation aromatics on today’s gem.
Please enjoy our heartiest recommendation for today’s wine. Today’s wine is a prime example of just how good small production wines can be.
Tasting Profile
Look: | An inky dark crimson, with swirls of darker purple throughout. |
---|---|
Smell: | Beautiful high-elevation aromatics on today’s Cab. Rich, concentrated dark fruit notes lay against eucalyptus, dry summer earth, cigar box, espresso bean, black peppercorn, and clove. |
Taste: | Equally rich and concentrated on the palate, with braised dark plum and black cherry providing a lush dark fruit backbone. These flavors are joined by notes of pipe tobacco, toasty wood fire, dark baking spices, currant, cedar wood, black peppercorn, and mocha. |
Finish: | A lovely structured finish, with grippy tannins that soften wonderfully at the edge of the palate. |
Pairing: | A grilled leg of lamb, dry rubbed with rosemary, garlic, and sea salt. |
