Seghesio Family Vineyards
2008 Defiant Red Blend
California: Sonoma County
The Seghesio Family just knows how to make great wine. Time after time we find ourselves pleasantly surprised by their offerings. And what we really love about them is their tendency to get a little funky with their blends.
For today’s 2008 Defiant Red Blend, the unique twist comes in the addition of Aglianico to a blend of their estate Cab and Syrah. Aglianico, a noble Italian varietal, is best known for producing wines of bold flavor, grippy tannin, and high acidity. These characteristics are clearly present in today’s blend, with the added structure and acidity from the Aglianico turning a fine blend into something extraordinary. Just be sure to decant this monster of a wine! Give it a little time in the glass and you’ll be richly rewarded with one of the best and most intriguing blends around.
Today’s wine drinks beautifully now, but we think it will age into something otherworldly after a few years. Enjoy!
A truly inky dark purple that hints at the serious wine to come.
Deliciously aromatic, with a very elegant, perfumy character. Dark plum and blackberry are blended with dark baking spices, dried rose petals, espresso bean, forest floor, and a subtle dried herbal undertone.
A deeply flavorful, well balanced wine on the palate, with flavors that are reminiscent of the nose. Braised plum, black cherry, and dark berry form a foundation for hints of anise, Provençal herbs, freshly cracked black peppercorn, mushroomy dark earth, and a touch of herbal black tea.
A beautiful beast of a wine, this slightly unusual blend is soft on entry, with grippy tannins that softly cling to the edges of the palate. The flavors really do coat the entirety of the palate. Decanting will work wonders on this wine.
A hearty cold weather pasta dish of penne, served in a light sauce with bacon and flageolet beans.
