A Family Affair
Seghesio is consistently one of California’s top Zinfandel producers, making lusty, full-throttled, spicy, and delicious old vine Zins from a collection of vineyards that date back to the late 1800’s. Their latest 2012 Old Vine is fantastic. It captures the exotic warm climate ripeness of Zin, the grape’s spiciness, tip-top French oak barrels, and a sense of balance that feels very Italian-American. A wine that drinks well at the table, but will also outshine most Zins in a head to head.
Robert Parker 92 Points, Dec 2014
“The 2012 Zinfandel Old Vine comes from vines that are at least 50-years-old. It offers oodles of black cherry and blackcurrant fruit along with spice box, pepper and fruitcake notes. Full-bodied, heady and complex, it is the most multidimensional of these 2012 Zinfandels. It is ideal for drinking over the next 4-5 years.”
Tasting Profile
Look: | Dark with crimson edges. |
---|---|
Smell: | Exotic! Chocolate, blackberries, clove, dusty earth, pepper, baking spices, toasty oak. |
Taste: | Dense blackberry, black raspberry, liquored cherries, mocha, and spicy nuances. This is a big wine, but comes across very polished and well proportioned. Mouth-filling, soul satisfying, and classic Old Vine Zinfandel character. |
Finish: | So smooth! Seghesio nails the suave textural combo of new oak and ripe jammy fruit. It tastes great, and the texture is velvety. It also wears the alcohol well with no evidence of warmth. |
Pairing: | This is such a great partner to a picnic table full of BBQ. The ample fruit and spice can handle a wide range of meats, sweet / sour marinades, and spice rubs. It is also exquisite all by its lonesome. |
