Mission Briefing

Codename:

Above the Rim

It may seem unlikely that former NBA star and international icon Yao Ming is now soaring above the competition in the Napa Valley. Not only did he enter an entirely new game in wine production, but he’s crushing it in his rookie season.

What’s impressive about his 2009 Yao Ming Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley is how the wine’s best qualities express a caliber of Cabernet that clearly has top winemaking, grapes, barrels, and land. This is a super impressive wine that will put a big smile on the face of Cab aficionados and collectors alike. Look for richly layered dark berries, cedar, sweet tobacco, and the signature dusty loam spice of Napa Valley fruit.

This is a wine that currently sells for $110-$150. Today via The Wine Spies it’s available for only $74.99.

Tasting Profile

Look:

Opaque. Pomegranate edged.

Smell:

Wow! Pronounced barrel aromas of roasted coffee, mocha, and vanilla. Cabernet Sauvignon varietal emerges with berries, plums, sweet tobacco, cedar, dusty earth, and even a pretty floral whiff.

Taste:

Deep and concentrated with dark berries, graphite, toast, cacao, and a dusty hillside spice.

Finish:

Smooth and plush with structure and bones. The flavors linger for 30 seconds. Serious stuff!

Pairing:

This is a big wine, but quite balanced. Best pairing options involve a prime cut of red meat such as an aged New York or grilled lamb chops.
