Mission Briefing

Codename:

The Elegant Beast

Today’s Barbed Oak Vineyards 2012 Zara’s Block Estate Grown Pinot Noir is quite the treat: a dark, deeply flavorful Pinot that also has a delightfully elegant side to it.

Today’s wine was crafted from a pristine vineyard in the Bennett Valley that is perfect for growing Pinot: warm, sunny days are followed by cool, coastal foggy evenings. The quality of the fruit has led many higher priced labels to come calling, but Barbed Oak always keeps a special allotment for themselves. Today’s wine is the fantastic result of their passionate vineyard management.

If you love a hearty but elegant Pinot, then today’s wine will be right up your alley.

Tasting Profile

Look:

A bit darker than your standard Pinot; perhaps the color of perfectly ripened black cherries that were just placed under the broiler.

Smell:

Subdued and elegant, with dark cherry and blackberry forming a fruit core that’s framed by a touch of dried Provençal herbs, peppercorn spice, dusty earth, and toasty oak.

Taste:

Well balanced notes of dark fruit, earth, and spice present themselves. Grilled Santa Rosa plum and black cherry are laid overtop dark baking spices, summer earth, black peppercorn, sweet tobacco, and bit of pomegranate herbal black tea.

Finish:

Delicious, with mouthwatering acidity, well rounded flavors, and an elegant mouthfeel. A touch of dried cranberry lingers as the wine fades.

Pairing:

Grilled pork chops, rubbed with sage, garlic, and sea salt.
