Mission Briefing

Shades of Gris

Oregon Pinot Gris is a favorite other white wine when Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc are getting us down. It’s one of the great North American place and grape combinations, so much better than export grade Italian Pinot Grigio, and way more useful and approachable than a thick, oily Pinot Gris from Alsace. Yup, the Willamette Valley has it dialed in when it comes to Pinot Gris. Archery Summit makes a truly impressive version named Vireton. The new release 2013 is as good a Gris, or Grigio, made in Oregon today.

Tasting Profile

Light straw.

White peach, lemongrass, tropical white flower like plumeria. Fig, marzipan, even almond richness. Wonderful aromas.

You’d think that all of the aromatics would yield a wine where fruit was front and center, and while this wine is well fruited, it’s a totally dry white wine with impressive depth and flavors. The tree fruits and tropics are are delicious, but never too much. Superb balance.

A citrusy acidity always keeps it tight, and keeps you coming back for more. Generous texture with bones and structure.

What a food loving wine. It has enough depth and weight to pretend it’s a red wine with seared tuna, grilled salmon, roasted chicken with mushrooms, a ham and cheese sandwich, and so much more.
