Struck Gold in Lodi again
Made by Lodi winemaking Jedi Greg Burns of Jessie’s Grove and St. Amant, Baron Cooper Zinfandel offers big savings for a wine with a lot of heart and soul. Lodi is thought of by many California wine devotees as having the best tasting old vineyards. Zinfandel vineyards, some over 100 years old, provide the the region with its most compelling offering. Warm and lusty flavors with layers of spicy complexity. We are believers in the power of old vines!
“This gorgeous, sultry siren of a wine is from Joey Tamura’s 8-acre plot of 44-year old vines on Lodi’s east side. It is near to Harney Lane, one of my faves, and the fruit character is similar. I love the pretty cranberry, wild strawberry, raspberry and red currant notes that mingle with the darker, sexier blackberry and boysenberry notes. There is also tomato leaf, sun dried tomato, Sicilian Castelvetrano olive, Italian black licorice, and a soft hint of both finely ground black pepper and sandalwood. It is plush, round, soft and juicy on the palate with vibrant notes of olallieberry and boysenberry, and it finishes with a pleasant tartness, leaving the palate ready for the next bite or sip. This wine is well-below its market value. Buy by the case and share with friends and family.” - 97 points, Catherine Fallis, Master Sommelier
Tasting Profile
Look: | Medium ruby. Not opaque. Transparent. |
---|---|
Smell: | Berries, cocoa, clove, eucalyptus, dusty earth. Wonderful incense. |
Taste: | Lots of juicy, deep, and layered Zinfandel flavors. Berries galore, but with a sense of balance. It never loses its fresh and delicious way amidst alcohol or sweetness - unlike so many other Zins. There’s a sweet, dusty earth inflection that’s reminiscent of a warm summer day in Lodi. This wine has a great sense of place and old vine concentration. |
Finish: | There’s an elegance here that makes it such a joy to keep drinking sip after sip. The wine finishes dry despite all of that fruit, which makes it a stellar match at the table. |
Pairing: | Enjoy with burgers, ribs, and other delights of the grill. It likes a hard, dark chocolate as much as any red wine, too. |
