Mission Briefing
Pedigreed
Today’s Watkins Family Winery 2008 Sonoma County Zinfandel comes from a winemaker with quite the storied past. Randall Watkins cut his teeth at big name wineries like Buena Vista Winery and Hartford Family Winery before launching his eponymous label. This pedigree shines through in today’s super delicious and super complex Zinfandel.
Today’s offering is a cut above the bombastic, fruit forward Zins you may be used to. Much more complex, with a level of balance we don’t always see in the varietal, this wine has a fantastic interplay between reduced fruit and terroir. Lying underneath these flavors is a subtle minerality that works to perfectly round out the flavor profile on this gem.
At over 30% off, we heartily recommend you stock up on today’s wine!
Tasting Profile
Look: | Inky, dark scarlet at center of the glass, with a touch of a lighter ruby at the edge. |
---|---|
Smell: | Wonderfully balanced and aromatic, with lush red raspberry, blackberry, and sweet plum overtop earthy notes of sandalwood, fresh forest floor, black peppercorn, coffee bean, and a touch of cassis. |
Taste: | The palate is full of reduced dark fruit of sweet plum, boysenberry, and blackberry. These delicious concentrated flavors are paired with more earthy tones of cherry wood, sweet tobacco leaf, clove, black peppercorn, and just the faintest touch of sage. |
Finish: | The finish is very smooth and long lasting, with a lovely grip on the edge of the tongue as the dark fruit notes slowly fade. |
Pairing: | A slowly braised pork shoulder, served with a creamy cilantro-lime sauce. |
