Robert Parker rated the superlative Vieux Lazaret Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvee Exceptionnelle not once, but twice. Here’s what he said each time:

“The limited production 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Exceptionnelle (90% Grenache and 10% Syrah from 40- to 80-year-old vines, with the Grenache aged in concrete tanks and the Syrah in small barrels) is stunning. Beautiful floral notes intermixed with licorice, incense, black raspberry, black cherry liqueur and a hint of camphor are followed by a dense, full-bodied, opaque ruby/purple-colored wine with layer upon layer of fruit and texture. This wine is very 2007-ish in style and personality and should drink well for 15+ years.” (Oct 2010)

“The deep purple-hued, savory Vieux Lazaret 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Exceptionnelle (a blend of 90% concrete-aged Grenache and 10% small barrel-aged Syrah from 40- to 85-year-old vines) is a richer, fuller, more intense and compelling example of the traditional cuvee. Given the voluptuous nature and opulence of the 2009 vintage, this wine can be drunk now or cellared for 15 years. It is expansive and full-bodied with copious black cherry and black raspberry fruit notes intertwined with hints of licorice and incense. This seductive effort is irresistible.

Tasting Profile

Dark garnet.

The unmistakable aromatics of S.Rhone Valley Grenache in its full glory. Liquored black cherry, white pepper, a sweet earthy spice, licorice, incense, and flowers. Stunning and complex. Impossible to stop sniffing!

Powerful stuff, as expected from the Grenache-studded, sun-baked boulder fields of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The abundant ripeness gives it an extraordinarily plush texture and mouthfeel. This is a supreme example of why Grenache is at its best at 15% alc. The flavors are a dizzyingly complex array of fresh, floral, vibrant - and more intensely savory, darker elements.

Hedonistic. If someone has never experienced great Châteauneuf-du-Pape before, this is the place to start. So generous, earthy, and exotic. The spicing is outrageous from start to finish.

This is a wine that certainly drinks well on its own, but has tremendous uses at the dinner table, too. Serve it up with meaty meals and special folks.
