Josef Chromy Wines
2012 Pepik Pinot Noir
Pinot Noir
Australia: Tasmania
Mission Briefing
Commonwealth
Pinot Noir is a most elusive grape varietal, known to bring people to tears with its haunting earthy red-fruited complexity. It also has an unbelievably finicky nature in the vineyard! It has its sweet spots on the world wine map that are well known: Burgundy, California’s fog-influenced coastal vineyards, New Zealand, Oregon, and Australia. The latter, Australia, has a few notable zones with Tasmania increasingly leading the hype. The wineries in Tasmania are relatively small, and as a result, it is tough to find (m)any examples of Tasmanian wines in the United States. Josef Chromy Wines is a game changer. Their 2012 Pepik is an eye-opening glimpse into just how good Tasmania is with dear old finicky Pinot Noir.
Tasting Profile
Look: | Light red, garnet, clear edges. |
---|---|
Smell: | Bright and fresh with abundant black cherry-strawberry, black tea spice, cola, and woodsy spice. Vivid expression of Pinot Noir aromatics. |
Taste: | Classic Pinot Noir flavors from a new place for us in Tasmania. Akin to New Zealand & Oregon in character, with a bright juicy element to the flavor and subtle but precise Pinot Noir seasonings and character. Very elegant and highly drinkable! |
Finish: | The complexity on the finish is outstanding. The lighter ruby color is true to form for Pinot Noir, and the flavors are fresh and so very tasty. |
Pairing: | Serve it cool with grilled sausages, a mushroom pizza, or spring lamb. |
