Today’s limited-release Maroon Wines 2010 Reserve Coombsville Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon blew the socks off our recent tasting panel. Lush, robust, and deeply layered, today’s wine is a near-perfect representation of a Reserve Napa Cab.
Today’s wine is best decanted and given a chance to breathe. Once it opens, this wine will greet you with classic dark fruit, hints of terroir, and fantastic structure. This structure lends itself to many years of cellaring potential - we recommend trying a bottle now and cellaring the rest for years to come. This wine is a classic Napa Cabernet, with big, bold flavors. On the nose, this wine exudes opulence.
The ‘10 vintage was the best on record for more than a decade. Wine Spectator Magazine awarded the 2010 Napa Cabernet vintage a whopping 99 points, and recommend that wine lovers ‘buy & hold’ as many superb ’10s as they can get their hands on. Maroon’s estate vineyard in Coombsville contains 18 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon that was sold to Joseph Phelps Vineyard for their flagship Insignia for ten years. That’s a $200 bottle of Cab! Neighbors of Robert Craig and the fabled Monticello Vineyard, Maroon made the transition from grower to grower and wine producer in 2008. The Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon Coombsville is their top bottle, and 100% estate grown.
Raised on a his family’s Monticello Rd. vineyard, and neighbor to Maroon, winemaker Chris Corley has been officially making Napa Valley Cabernet and Bordeaux-style red blends since 1989 at the Corley’s Monticello Vineyard. He’s a natural fit as the winemaker for Maroon with his long history and understanding of their specific Coombsville terroir. Corely has made his share of 90+ Robert Parker rated Napa Valley Cabs, and if Maroon submitted wines for RP review, this would likely add to that list of accolades.

94 points “This head-turner of a Cabernet comes from the recently-recognized Coombsville AVA in the cool, southeastern corner of Napa Valley. There’s just so much to like about this wine. It has voluptuous blackberry and cassis flavors with a thread of bright red cherry running through it, subtle olive and cedar notes and a flourish of vanilla and licorice on the finish. 92 points “One of the newest examples is the Maroon 2010 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. Made with fruit from Paul and Renee Maroon’s estate vineyard, the wine is aged for 30 months in fine French oak barrel. After being blended and bottled, this elegant reserve wine features fresh scents of dark fruits, earth, and spice. With a few swirls, the bright flavors of dark plum, black raspberry, cranberry, sage, clove and bittersweet chocolate become more engaging with every sip. Overall, the wine is naturally soft, sexy and elegant with lively flavors, chewy tannins, creamy texture, and generous layers of spice on the long, dry finish. Super dark, foreboding scarlet at its core, with only a hint of a lighter ruby at the fringe.
Bold and concentrated aromas of dark plum and blackberry greet you initially and are quickly trailed by sweet tobacco leaf, coffee bean, black peppercorn, and a hint of lavender.
Beautifully well rounded on the palate, with dark fruit flavors of reduced blackberry, black currant, and black cherry delicately laid overtop saddle leather, espresso bean, toasted oak, dark baking spices, pomegranate black tea, and a touch of violet.
After decanting, the wine is incredibly supple and smooth, with fantastic structure and balance. Well suited to many years of cellaring.
Perfectly grilled filet mignon, served medium rare with roasted root vegetables and golden mashed potatoes.
