Chalk it up

The Chalk Hill Estate Winery is a unique winery that makes, well, incredible wines. The vineyards that span the estate span several microclimates. This, due to the varied terrain. What does it mean for the farming and for the grapes? Well, it certainly makes growing and tending a lot more difficult. The winery pulls it off though, as evidenced by today’s wine.

Today’s Chalk Hill Estate Winery 2011 Estate Red blend gets the best grapes from the winery’s estate vineyard blocks, making it a truly masterful blend.

If you are looking for an elegant, food-fantastic wine that happens to be an incredible steal, you’ve found it. And don’t worry, we won’t tell your friends that you didn’t pay the $70 price tag.

Tasting Profile

Look:

Dark and inky, with deep purple hues through and through.

Smell:

Dark plum, blackberry and cassis combine with raspberry, spice, toasty oak and a hint of tobacco leaf and green peppercorn.

Taste:

Bold but balanced, with blackberry, black cherry, plum preserve and blueberry notes that are tempered by earthen flavors of tobacco, dried rose petal, lightly toasted oak, sweet spice and just a hint of peppercorn.

Finish:

Long, clean and bright, with supple tannins leaving the palate feeling silky smooth.

Pairing:

We enjoyed this wine with cheddar and bacon burgers, grilled veggies and roasted red baby potatoes with olives and whole clove garlic. The combination was divine.
