Mission Briefing

Today’s beautiful Spanish blend of Tempranillo, Graciano and Mazuelo, is so good that it earned 98 points from Tasting Panel Magazine and, more significantly, Wine of the Year from Decanter Magazine. This Faustino I 2001 Gran Reserva Rioja will definitely not last the day, so please hurry - before we sell out.
It is easy to see why so much praise has been heaped upon today’s wine. The wine is balanced, bright, many-layered and so very delicious. Serve this impressive, food-fabulous wine with a wide selection of cuisine choices, or enjoy it all on its own. The wine shines, not matter how you enjoy it.
We’re sorry that we could not get more of this wine and we do hope that you have a chance to acquire some. Once we sell out, the wine will be gone forever.
Here is what the wine press has to say about this fantastic wine:
“(85% Tempranillo, 10% Graciano, 5% Mazuelo) Deep ruby color; mushroom and rich, ripe and intense plum, black cherries and spice, tobacco, leather. Great acidity, crushed flowers, super long finish.” - 98 points - Tasting Panel Magazine

“Deliciously decadent, with extraordinary vitality on the palate and a long, unique finish. A jewel at this price. I gave this wine full marks – it was perfect. I cannot think of any other wine, in this price range, that provides so much complexity, elegance, style, classicism and length.” - 97 points - Pedro Ballesteros Torres, Decanter magazine (September 2013)
~
“Rusty and mature looking, this is woodsy, dry and rooty on the nose, with whiffs of tree bark and tobacco running alongside cherry and berry notes. It’s mature, with flavors of stewed plum, herbs and spice that are straight from the textbook, while the finish is dry, earthy and showing core acidity.” - 91 points - Michael Schachner, Wine Enthusiast (7/1/2014)
Tasting Profile
Look: | Dark burgundy hues, reminiscent of blackberry juice. Tall, slow moving legs meander slowly down the glass after a good swirl. |
---|---|
Smell: | Fresh black cherry, blackberry and dark raspberry with sweet spice, sweet tobacco, leather, cedar and a hint of smoky cherry and black pepper. |
Taste: | Dark mixed berry and cigar box, plum, warm spice, Bing cherry, cranberry, cedar, supple leather, baker’s chocolate, flinty minerals and cracked pepper. |
Finish: | Exceptionally long, with bright fruit that slowly gives way to cigar box and spice as the fruits fade. |
Pairing: | Enjoy this very flexible wine with nearly anything. We suggest a Spanish paella with seafood and chorizo. |
