Rule of Thumb

Welcome to our latest Super Spy Sunday. Today’s elite selection is the Thumbprint Cellars 2012 Dry Creek Valley Petite Verdot, a rich, bold, balanced and downright ostentatious. You might expect a PV to be a brash beast, but today’s food-friendly wine is balanced, refined and a pleasure to imbibe.

Today’s Thumbprint Cellars 2012 Dry Creek Valley Petite Verdot is a rich, bold, balanced and downright ostentatious. You might expect a PV to be a brash beast, but today’s food-friendly wine is balanced, refined and a pleasure to imbibe.

This wine is very aromatic, with scents that jump from the glass. Blackberry, blueberry, black cherry and cassis lead the way. Underneath these lie violet, red rose petal, cedar, dark chocolate, sweet spice and soft oak.

On the palate, dark, concentrated flavors of ripe blackberry, cassis, raisin, and cassis, with rich follow-on flavors of dark chocolate, spice box, dried tobacco leaf, and toasty cedar.

We scooped up every last case that we could, but today’s very highly recommended wine will not last the day.

Tasting Profile

Look:

Brilliant crimson at the edges to dark purple at the core. Tall, skinny, tightly-spaced legs move swiftly down the glass wall.

Smell:

Blackberry, blueberry, black cherry, cassis, violet, red rose petal, cedar, dark chocolate, sweet spice and soft oak.

Taste:

Ripe blackberry, raisin and cassis, dark chocolate, spice box, dried tobacco leaf, and toasty cedar.

Finish:

Ultra long with great tannin structure. Dark fruit flavors and earthy goodness all tail off in equal proportion, leaving behind a supple dryness that spreads across the palate.

Pairing:

We’re going to enjoy our bottles with grilled ribeye steaks served with a wild mushroom polenta!
