Mission Codename High Score

Today’s Stonestreet Wines 2011 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon is a limited-quantity wine that will not last the day. Robert Parker (93 points) adores this wine. Stephen Tanzer (93 points) is crazy about it. Wine Enthusiast Magazine awarded the wine 93 points and named the wine their official Cellar Selection.

What about Antonio Galloni? Well, he’s very impressed.

There wasn’t very much of today’s wine left at the winery so Agent Red scooped up every last case that he could. Today’s Stonestreet Wines 2011 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon is a juicy, plush, bold expression of Cab from high atop the Mayacamas mountain vineyard made famous by Stonestreet. For those not in the know, Stonestreet boasts one of the most expansive and varied mountain vineyards anywhere. Wines from this vineyard consistently garner scores in the 90s.

This Mountain Cabernet is full and very lush on the nose, with Black cherry, blackberry, black currant and grilled plum out in front. As the wine breathes, it opens up to reveal added aromas of cigar box, leather, brown spice, dried orange peel, clay and a hint of black pepper.

On the palate, this wine is bright and juicy on entry, then quickly more robust and sturdy, with bold flavors of pomegranate, cassis, blackberry, plum skin, grilled fig, green peppercorn, savory spice and warm black pepper.

This wine expresses glorious mountain fruit at its finest.

Enough from us, here’s what the critics have to say:

“The opaque purple-colored 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon Monument Ridge comes from elevations ranging from 500 to 2,400 feet. It offers up aromas of stones, sweet red and black currants, and a big rich attack followed by a touch of herbaceousness. The latter component kept my score from going higher. Composed of 93% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot and 2% Malbec, it was aged 18 months in one-third new French oak. An excellent Cabernet with moderately high tannins, it will benefit from 3-4 years of cellaring, and should drink well over the following decade.” - 93 points - Robert Parker.

“Bright ruby-red. Black fruits, coffee, licorice and oaky chocolate and mocha on the nose. Densely packed and firmly built, with a strong spine of ripe acidity giving definition and punch to the flavors of blackberry, black cherry, minerals and chocolate. Quite penetrating and youthfully tight but there’s good underlying fat to support the youthfully edgy tannins. This will need a few years in the bottle to soften and blossom.” - 91 points - Stephen Tanzer

“Savory herbs, raspberry jam, flowers, mint and spices all meld together in the 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon Monument Ridge. Dark, powerful and authoritative, this juicy, flavorful Cabernet impresses for its balance and overall class. There is plenty of depth in the dark fruit, yet I would prefer to drink the 2011 sooner rather than later.” - Antonio Galloni, Vinous.

~

“Dark and dense with blackberry, cassis and plum; rich and spicy with herbs and deep, intense flavors; long and balanced.” - 90 points - Anthony Dias Blue, September 2015
