Ty Caton Vineyards
2014 Moon Mountain Ballfield Syrah
California: Sonoma County: Moon Mountain
The Purple River
Rejoice! Today’s 2014 Moon Mountain Ballfield Syrah is a single vineyard delight that is one of the best that we’ve sampled from this hidden gem Wine Spies favorite winery.
This is a big wine that is ready to drink now, but has the stuffing to go another decade - or longer so be sure to stock up.
Full to bursting with aromas, this wine leads with smoky blackberry jam, cassis, black licorice, savory dried meats, dark leather, subtle herbs, soft spice and black pepper.
Flavors are dark and smoky, with stewed black plum, blackberry compote, black cherry, smoked meats, hard leather, anise, mixed brown spice and black pepper.
Drink now, or cellar for a decade or longer.
Ty’s wines have been featured on Wine Spies nearly 30 times in these last 8+ years. We keep going back for more because we love his wines.
Do you know who else loves Ty’s wines? Our Operatives!
Special note: This limited production - and highly recommended wine has limited availability. You won’t find it anywhere but the winery itself… and The Wine Spies!
Dark and inky, with darkest maroon hues. Tightly-spaced tears descend slowly down the glass wall.
Smoky blackberry jam, cassis, black licorice, savory dried meats, dark leather, subtle herbs, soft spice and black pepper.
Black plum, blackberry compote, black cherry, smoked meats, hard leather, anise, mixed brown spice and black pepper.
Ultra long and very plush, with fruits that fade to reveal leather, meat, spice and pepper at the tail end.
This bold wine would be perfectly paired with a raised beef Brasato with pappardelle and a side of cooked spinach.
