About the El Dorado Hills AVA: Located in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains, vineyards are found at elevations between 1,200 feet and 3,500 feet above sea level. Some of the best vineyards in the region are planted above 2,000 feet elevation.
This region benefits from the cool breezes that come off the mountains. These currents push hot air off the vines in the evening. The variance in temperature places stress on the vines, which in turn gives the fruit more depth and character. The soils of the region, which are magma based with high levels of acidity, also contribute to the complexity of the grapes grown here.
