Mission Codename The Refreshest

Today’s Frankland Estate 2014 Netley Road Vineyard Riesling really took me by surprise! Here in America, we don’t often have the opportunity to sample many excellent Rieslings. Some of the best Rieslings hail from Germany, but Australia is also a hot spot for this delightful varietal.

From the initial pour, we quickly realized that today’s white wine has “it”. A beautiful light straw in the glass, this wine has that delightful acidic pop that you hope for in a Riesling. Enjoy delicately nuanced flavors and a very refreshing overall appeal.

Fresh and breezy, with bright aromas of lime flower, key lime, lemon zest, Meyer lemon, white tea leaf, pomelo, river rock, flint and dried hay.

Very bright and very fresh on the palate, with delightful flavors of Meyer lemon, lemon zest, orange blossom, pineapple, lychee, slate mineral, apricot, pomelo, and lime leaf.

Please hurry, as this 91 point crowd-pleasing summertime refresher is only available in limited quantity.

Here’s what the wine press has to say:

91 points - Joe Czerwinski, Wine Enthusiast - “Marked by struck flint and petrol notes on the nose, this medium-bodied wine is the most richly textural of Franklin Estate’s three single-vineyard wines. Crushed stone and citrus notes linger through the finish.”

90 points - Philip White, Drinkster - “Right from the start, this one smells like Clare Riesling. It’s all citrus leaf, and the smell of whole squashed lime, with juice, peel and pith, like you get when you use a pestle to mull limes in the bottom of your old fashioned glass as you lay down the foundations of a capriosca.

It has a dusty edge as well, but this one reminds me quite specifically of worn-out podsolic soil shot with with ironstone after the first few drops of summer rain. It’s quite limy in the mouth, too: more conventional than the Isolation Ridge. I suspect its berries got a fair touch of sun - if so, it might become one of those Rieslings which the Brits seem to think smell of petrol, which they like… which says a lot about them, really.

It dries the gums and makes your lips pucker. It’s full-on, and is exactly the style of Riesling to which I add a bloody big ice block and a splash of soda.”
