Mission Codename A Thousand Berries
Today’s wine should not be missed, dear Operative.
If you adore incredible Shiraz as much as we do, you won’t be disappointed with today’s 94 point (RP) selection, the 2011 McLaren Vale Shiraz from fabled South Australia producer Shirvington.
At today’s deeply discounted price, this wine is a true steal of a deal.
Wines of the McLaren Vale are something uniquely special. They stand out from other Aussie wines in some very important ways, in terms of aromatics, mouthfeel and flavor profile. McLaren Vale wines are big, Big, BIG…. but always very pleasing, without any of the brashness often associated with other regions.
An explosion of berry, spice, earth and dried meats greets the nose. In the lead, big aromas of blackberry, strawberry, black cherry, boysenberry, blueberry and smoky Bing cherry. these are followed closely by dried beef, graphite, black licorice, baker’s chocolate, flint, dark spice and black pepper.
Flavors burst onto the palate, with dark berry compote (of blackberry, blueberry, boysenberry), black cherry, smoky cherry, plum, graphite, flint, spice box, darkly toasted oak, black licorice, tobacco leaf and black pepper.
Decant for at least 30 minutes for optimal results. As this wine breathes, it softens, revealing additional layers of flavor along with softer, more fruit-laden aromatics.
We are absolutely crazy about this deep and sexy wine and we offer it to you with our very enthusiastic recommendation.
Please note: When our supplier told us that there were only [REDACTED] cases available in the US, we scooped up every last case. This wine will sell out, so please make your purchase early.
Here’s what the wine press has to say:
92 points - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate - “Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2011 Shiraz was 100% barrel-fermented and aged in 58% French and 42% American oak.
The wine is intensely scented of warm blackberries, mulberries and preserved plums with nuances of menthol, incense and cinnamon stick. Full-bodied and packed with blackberry preserves and spice box flavors, it presents a seamless foundation of medium level, velvety tannins and lively acid before finishing with very good length.
1,136 six-bottle cases were made. Drink it now to 2021+.”
