Bacio Divino Cellars
2013 Pazzo (Call Me Crazy) Red Wine
California: Napa Valley: Calistoga
As crazy does
Today’s stupendous wine was made one of my wine heroes, Kirk Venge. The son of America’s first 100 point winemaker, Nils Venge, Kirk is a phenomenal winemaker in his own right.
Today’s Bacio Divino Cellars 2013 Pazzo is one of the best Kirk Venge wines I’ve tasted. All of Kirk’s wines are of the topmost in quality.
We’ve spent quite a bit of time chasing today’s winery. Agent Red chased them for, literally, years! We got close to selling a prior vintage of this amazing wine, but the winery sold out.
Our intrepid Red kept up the begging - and the winery finally came through with a small allocation of today’s truly extraordinary (we’re not being hyperbolic here, this wine is _amazing) Calistoga red blend, the Bacio Divino Cellars 2013 Pazzo (Call Me Crazy) Red Wine.
Wow, what a nose! This wine leads with bold, dark blackberry compote, blueberry jam, cured meats, leather, spice, black cherry and subtle campfire.
Bold flavors explode onto the palate, with blackberry juice, plum jam, smoky cherry candy, leather, smoked meat, baking spice, dark chocolate, twigs, subtle graphite and subtle black pepper.
This rich, layered and deeply delicious wine is very highly recommended! Please come by and reserve yours soon. Our supply is limited.
Here’s what the wine press has to say:
90 points - Virginie Boone, Wine Enthusiast - “A Sangiovese-based blend named for the expression “Call me Crazy,” this wine also contains small amounts of Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. Crazy or not, it works, providing a thicket of black and blue berry, smoky cinnamon and a juicy, medium build, meant to please, not to over-ponder.”
Nearly black, with bold crimson edges and an opaque heart. Short, chubby legs form quickly - before streaking downward.
Blackberry compote, blueberry jam, cured meats, leather, spice, black cherry and subtle campfire.
Blackberry juice, plum jam, smoky cherry candy, leather, smoked meat, baking spice, dark chocolate, twigs, subtle graphite and subtle black pepper.
The wine enters the palate, lightweight and soft, but then becomes quickly grippy as plush tannins grab at the edges of the palate. A chewy, crushed velvet feeling pervades the entire palate, eventually drying lips, cheeks and even gums.
This bold beauty wants to be paired with something rich and delicious, like a spice-rubbed steak or a coffee-crusted pork loin.
