Mission Codename Brick Smart
The Napa Valley is home to some of the most prestigious wineries in the world. We regularly feature Napa Valley wines that run into the hundred dollar price range.
Rarely do we show a sturdy Napa Red (like today’s!) for less than $20.
Today’s Scholar & Mason 2013 Mortarboard Red Wine is a bold, juicy, food-fantastic wine that delivers incredible value at today’s price. This fantastic wine was made by Dan Fitzgerald, who perfected his winemaking skills at Robert Sinskey Vineyards - and others.
See why Dan has become one of our favorite winemakers.
This wine is very full on the nose, with aromas of black cherry, smoky blueberry, cherry cola, leather, spice, cassis, grilled plum and black pepper.
On the palate, dark flavors cascade across the tongue, with black cherry, grilled plum, blackberry preserve, blueberry compote, hard leather, medium spice (not soft, not strong), subtle tobacco and a hint of cracked pepper.
This young wine is currently drinking beautifully and we think that it will only improve over the next few years. Enjoy with a variety of food pairings, especially something hearty and meaty!

Here’s what the wine press has to say:
95 points - “Sommelier to the Stars” Chris Sawyer - “If you are looking for a unique wine from Napa Valley, then try the Scholar & Mason 2013 Mortarboard Red. Made with 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and smaller portions of Charbono, Syrah and Malbec, this wine immediately dazzles the senses with fragrant aromas of blue and red fruits, peppermint, mocha, vanillin, and cedar cigar box.
On the palate, each variety makes its presence known. For the Cabernet Sauvignon, it’s all about the deep flavors of dark berries and cocoa, rich texture, and structure. The Syrah adds layers of blueberry and spice. The Malbec contributes red fruits flavors with hints of tobacco and pepper and the rarer grape variety, Charbono, provides extra pop to the finish with juicy red fruit notes of fresh currents and cherries.
Overall, a unique red blend which fills the entire mouth with bright flavors and smooth texture.
Try this proprietary wine with tangy soups, grilled vegetables, rice and quinoa salads, gourmet burgers, roasted ribs, hearty stews, and barbequed meats.”
