Mission Codename Fly like the wind
Today’s wine is offered to you with our heartiest recommendation. Yes, the wine is that superb!
We’re absolutely crazy about the wines of David Mahaffey, and today’s Olivia Brion 2013 Wild Horse Valley Pinot Noir is one of his very best. If you don’t think that this is one of the finest Pinots we’ve ever featured, Agent Red will buy back every bottle - and put them right into his personal cellar!
This wine is another aromatic marvel from winemaker David Mahaffey! On the nose, this wine just sings, with beautiful aromas, of cherry juice, exotic perfume, soft sweet spice, subtle oak, subtle kola and a hint of gunpowder.
On the palate, this wine is juicy and complex, with flavors that begin with Bing cherry, raspberry, wild strawberry and cassis notes, and continue with vanilla, cherry bark, soft spice, toasty oak and a very subtle hint of that lovely gunpowder taste that we’ve come to adore in our California Pinots.
So, where does this wine hail from? The obscure, tiny, often missed Wild Horse Valley AVA. This American Viticultural Area whose borders overlap both Napa County and Solano County, California, was founded in 1987… thanks to David Mahaffey, who submitted the original appellation.
This sub-appellation of the broader Napa Valley AVA is partially contained within the Napa Valley AVA. Despite the appellation’s southerly location, which results in more hours of sunshine than other locations in Napa Valley, the Wild Horse Valley enjoys a cool climate, approximating France’s Burgundy region. The Valley’s proximity to San Pablo Bay, which results in a cooler climate, makes the Wild Horse Valley attractive for the cultivation of grapes like Pinot Noir.
Drink now or hold for the next few years.
