Mission Codename Elegant Equation
By now you’ve come to know the wines of Grand Napa. This winery has made more than 20 appearances on our pages since we first featured them in late 2015. Always, their wines are very popular and we field plenty of Operative requests for more.
Grand Napa keeps rolling out the hits! Today, we’ve got a very special deal on their newest wine, the delectable Calculated Risk 2014 Mt. Veeder Napa Valley Red Wine. We’ve been sworn to secrecy about the vineyard source. Just know that wines from this same vineyard typically sell for $150 or more…
The core of this wine is a blood red garnet. The edge is auburn with a transitional ring of ruby. This wine has an extremely approachable nose with notes of raspberry, leather, strawberry, allspice, and lavender. The palate is beautiful in this blend with a harmonious marriage of cherry, cranberry, date, peony, barrel spice and preserved plums. It’s bright and fruit-forward with a wonderfully expansive mouthfeel that crescendos in a long, tapered finish. This is just an all-around approachable wine - go with the classics: An All-American classic cheeseburger with a thick high-quality patty and sharp cheddar.
Enjoy!

Here’s what the wine press has to say.
94 Points - Chris Sawyer, “Sommelier to the Stars” - “Although they are located just a few miles west of Hwy 29 between Napa and Oakville, the stoic vineyards planted on the slopes of the Mount Veeder appellation are generally hidden from public view by the dense forest cascading down the Mayacamas Range. This unique setting allows the fruit to ripen slowly with a steady flow of warm sun during the day and cool mountain breezes in the late afternoon. When you throw in the facts that the soils are lean, rugged and rocky; at harvest, the end result are small grape clusters packed with concentrated flavors and true hillside character that set them apart from those grown on the valley floor.
The latest example is the new release of the Calculated Risk. With a dark red hue, this 2014 Mount Veeder Red opens up with dense aromas of wild berries, blue fruits and more subtle hints of licorice, wild herbs, mineral, and cedar. From the glass, the palate is caressed with ripe and tangy flavors of briary blackberry, boysenberry, blueberry tart, cassis, fresh sage, and savory spices leading to a long, persistent finish. Pure mountain swagger in every sip.
Suggested Food Pairings: Hard cheeses, risotto with wild mushrooms, seared Ahi tuna with espresso rub, Beef Wellington, rack of lamb, and chocolate truffles.”
