Throw me in the Briggs
Hot on the heels of a very successful August Briggs showing, our Operatives were thirsty for more! This time around, August Briggs gave us every last bottle of their astonishingly good 2014 Page Nord Vineyard Napa Valley Syrah. Our special price and low quantity on this one ensure another sellout hit.
Here we have a Syrah with a dark heart of garnet surrounded by a very thin ring of gorgeous magenta at the edge. This wine has a rich and alluring nose with Syrah’s hallmark white pepper as well as cardamom, strawberry, anise, and lilac. On the palate, there is a deep and expansive flavor profile of black tea, cherry, gesho, tomato leaf, and black plum. This wine catches you by surprise by offering the typical dark, extracted flavor profile of Syrah, yet with a more atypical softness of tannin that must be attributed to the winemaker - very nuanced and very quaffable. It’s fiesta time! You’ll be in paradise if you can find some top-notch pork tamales to pair with this tasty Syrah.
August Briggs winemaker, Jesse Inman, is the nephew of August “Joe” Briggs, the founder and original winemaker of August Briggs Winery. Joe took Jesse under his wing at an early age, teaching Jesse all there was to know about the art of winemaking. in 2006, Jesse joined the winery as assistant winemaker. In 2011, Jesse took over all winemaking duties. Today, Jesse continues to pay tribute to Uncle Joe, by carrying on his uncle’s traditions - while creating traditions of his own.
Grab this one while you still can, Operative!
Here’s what the wine press has to say.
92 Points - Virginie Boone, Wine Enthusiast - “Compost, earth and wild truffle mix on the entry of this wine, making for a feral edge of varietal character. Supple tannin lies beneath layers of leather, meat and baked plum and cherry, with tart acidity adding to the freshness and overall balance of the wine.”
