Mission Codename Merlot Hero
Welcome to our latest Super Spy Sunday, where each Sunday we endeavor to bring you a super high-end wine - at a super low price.
We have another Super QPR Steal of a Deal from our friends at Doce Robles. Today, we’re lucky to have their food-fantastic Doce Robles 2011 Estate Reserve Paso Robles Merlot. With so much fruit on the nose & palate - and a bright acidity - you might want to keep plenty of this wine on hand. We adore this food-fabulous treat.
This Merlot has a beautiful ruby coloring with excellent consistency and clarity throughout. The nose is huge and very varietally correct, with notes of strawberry, toffee, toasted nuts, sandalwood, and slate. The palate is full of wonderful fruit character with pluot, bubblegum, bing cherry, wild strawberry, and gooseberry. The bright fruit is driven by the bright acidity, and while it has a lighter body in terms of mouthfeel, it makes up for it with huge fruit-forward drinking experience. This wine would go nicely with a watermelon salad with arugula and bleu cheese crumbles.
The small-production Doce Robles Winery is the very first winery to have appeared on the now winery-heavy Highway 46. Doce Robles’ neighbors include the likes of Peachy Canyon, Sextant and Castoro Cellars… to name just a few. Doce Robles planted their vineyards in 1996 to Barbera, Zinfandel, Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc. Primitivo, Petite Sirah, and Malbec were also planted in 2010 and 2012.
