Mission Codename Couldn't drag me away
We first showcased the wines of Wild Horse Winery back in 2009. We were impressed then, but we’re truly fans of the winery now. Today’s special wine is the Wild Horse Winery and Vineyards 2013 Central Coast GSM. This Rhone blend, which is comprised of 73% Syrah, 22% Grenache and 5% Mourvèdre, is a true steal!
This Rhone varietal blend has a faint transparency to it allowing light to pass through it, causing the wine to shine like a fiery ruby. At first, the Grenache appears to dominate with cola, blackberry, and dusty bramble aromas. Upon revisiting it, the Syrah with its hallmark white pepper note appears bringing an earthy element along for the ride. As the wine opens up, bright cherry notes mix with black plum and allspice. Potpourri floral spice quality comes through as well with finishing notes of fig and tobacco. GSM’s are known for being robust. Wild Horse gives us one that is both robust and approachable, with moderate tannin that leaves plenty of room for fruit and juicy finish. This would be heavenly with braised pork belly with a side of spicy blistered Padron peppers.
Wild Horse Winery and Vineyards has been producing wine since the early 1980s. With a focus on sustainably produced blends from the various appellations within California’s Central Coast, Wild Horse makes wines that are balanced, bodacious, and always beautiful. Today’s Ultra QPR (Quality to Price Ratio) wine is a delightful wine that won’t break the bank. Be sure to stock up on this one.
Enjoy!
