Conn Creek Winery
2014 "Anthology" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
California: Napa Valley
Note: We sold out of the 2013 vintage and we’ll very likely sell out of today’s 2014 Anthology. This wine was the final vintage made by longtime winemaker, Mike McGrath, who can be seen discussing the wine in the video below.
Today’s 2014 “Anthology” Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon makes history as one of the best vintages of this flagship Cabernet Sauvignon from the iconic Conn Creek Winery. This wine is one of the finest Anthology wines that we’ve tasted, and since the winery is nearing the end of its supply, we encourage you to add a few bottles to your collection - before your fellow Operatives grab it all up.
When we featured the 2013 vintage of this wine, our Operatives made the wine an instant Best Seller. When we got our hands on the 2014 vintage, we knew that it would outsell the prior vintage. Wine Spectator Magazine graced the 2014 Napa Cabernet vintage with a remarkable 96 point score. Wines like this don’t last long.
This Napa Cab looks picture perfect with high density and an even garnet hue from center to edge. The nose is fresh, fragrant and approachable with redolent with berry notes of cherry, blackberry, raspberry framboise with a potpourri floral and spice component. Top it off with a heady aroma of brambles and you get the picture. It comes through just as well on the palate as it delivers outstanding flavors of cola, allspice, tobacco, plum compote, and black cherry. This is just what you’re hoping for when you pop any cork - a luxuriously smooth yet unabashedly powerful wine with complexity and character. Kudos to the winemaker! If you’ve got the patience and a butcher that can do beef shanks, osso buco with a mirepoix would be a perfect choice.
This is the final vintage of this wine to have been made by Conn Creek’s Winemaker, Mike McGrath. Mike spent 35 years making wine with some of the greats of the industry, like Grgich Hills Estate, William Hill Estate Winery, Villa Mt. Eden, and Charles Krug before joining Conn Creek. Mike, who retired from Conn Creek last year, waxes romantic over today’s wine, in this video:
