Oh, boy, did we get lucky with today’s Italian gem! Today’s Bollina 2016 “Zenas” Puglia IGT Primitivo was named one of Italy’s Top Primitivos wines of the year by leading Italian wine critic, Luca Maroni. He also awarded the wine a super high 98 point score. Primitivo is a close genetic cousin of Zinfandel - with Italian flair! Both varietals are actually clones of both clones of a Croatian grape called Crljenak Kaštelanski.

This wine is bright red with subtle magenta tones that contribute to a beautiful look in the glass. Some jammy fruit notes of blackberry meet deeply rich notes of steaming hot chocolate for a decadent bouquet that also features aromas of orange blossom, honey, toffee, and cherry. The flavor profile is equally lush with big fruit tones of cherry ganache, boysenberry, cassis, mocha, and aromatic tobacco. Drinks like a wonderful Italian take on a Zinfandel with a soft mouthfeel and big fruit notes providing an easy drinking, yet tasty experience. Anything goes with this Primitivo, but pork chops seasoned with Italian herbs would be particularly nice.

Primitivo, a native grape of southern Italy can trace its earliest heritage back to ancient Greece. Primitivo gets its name from the monks who tended this varietal as they noticed it was one of the first to ripen amongst their vines. Known for its rich and vibrant color, aromas, and flavors of zesty cherry and spice, Primitivo is best enjoyed young (within five or so years of bottling). Some examples improve with cellaring as well.
