This wine will sell out!
Here’s what we told you about this wine when we featured it earlier this year:
The iconic To Kalon Vineyard in Napa Valley’s Oakville AVA (American Viticultural Area) has produced some of the world’s most prized and sought-after wines. And while most of the hubbub that you hear about To Kalon revolves around the Cabernets that are born there, it is the whites that captivate our attention today.
Today’s Robert Mondavi Winery 2015 Oakville Napa Valley Fumé Blanc is really an extraordinary wine. We’ve never sampled anything quite like it.
This Fumé Blanc is an absolutely lovely shade of faint peridot with crystalline clarity. The aromatic bouquet instantly hooks you with powerful tropical fruit notes of candied lychee, mango, guava, banana and elderflower with a subtle twist of Serrano pepper. On the palate, stonefruit kicks in as well with bright peach and nectarine with tangerine citrus and the lychee and mango found on the nose. This is a true summer treat, with refreshing, bright acidity that livens up your taste buds from start to finish. A dip in the pool is the best pairing, but if you’re hungry, bruschetta served with Meyer lemon infused chèvre would work too.
in 1966, Robert Mondavi was a man with a mission. Mondavi had the vision to create the first major post-prohibition winery in the United States. His dream of crafting the best wines in the world has been realized and today the winery is recognized as a global leader in fine wine. It hardly gets much more fine than with today’s Oakville Fumé Blanc, a worthy homage to the master of wine himself.
Here’s what the wine press has to say.
94 Points - Virginie Boone, Wine Enthusiast - “A blend of 79% Sauvignon Blanc and 21% Sémillon barrel fermented largely in 60-gallon French oak barrels, this is a well-integrated and substantial offering of sublime texture, length, and complexity. Jasmine aromas ride atop fresh, vibrant layers of Meyer lemon and nectarine, a stony mineral element persistent on the finish.”
91 Points - MaryAnn Worobiec, Wine Spectator - “Rich and opulent, offering a mix of honeysuckle, candied ginger peel, and lemon verbena flavors on a smooth and crisp body. Strikes a terrific balance and finishes with plenty of spice and zest.”
91 Points - Wine & Spirits Magazine - “Robert Mondavi produced the first Fumé Blanc in 1968, inventing a new name and a new style for sauvignon blanc. Fifty years later, the wine is still distinctive, this vintage being super oaky at first, then saturated with a rich, golden fruit presence. It’s as savory as a meat broth with notes of flamed orange zest. Decant it for ginnery braised rabbit.”
