Mission Codename Duke of Ducks

This tremendous Napa Valley value at 44% off is as noble as a Duke of Bordeaux, as the “rescuer” of its wine-loving people. In fact, it’s modeled after the great Bordeaux cuvées of the Right Bank that add a few zeros to the unbelievable bottle price that The Wine Spies proudly serve up for our Operatives. By the time you finish reading this in-depth further, this mighty duck may have long migrated so we encourage you to secure as much as you can before the few remaining cases at the winery library fly away for good.

Black as the night in the opaque core of the wine, pointing at some bottle age on the glowing garnet edges. The intensity of fruit here on the nose is off the charts; pure, dark, and powerful with the ripest character. The wine truly blossoms on the palate, generous with gloriously hefty tannins and oak spice letting the fruit sing through. Full-bodied and complete on the finish with a sense of style and elegance as well as weight. A powerhouse of flavors, this rare breed shows the oomph to stand tall next to the rich saucy roasts or stews.

Situated on the Northwest corner of Dunaweal Lane and the Silverado Trail in Calistoga, the 25-acre Canard Vineyard is considered a historic vineyard in Napa Valley. Rich and Carolyn Czapleski have quietly been making wine from their estate vineyard for over 35 years and veteran winemaker Brian Graham has been producing some beautiful wines. James Suckling rated Napa’s 2014 vintage as “one of its best years in the last two decades,” - and this wine is truly proof that this statement is true.

Here’s what the wine press has to say:

92 points – James Suckling - ” A pleasantly chewy red with currants, berries and dark chocolate as well as hints of hazelnut. Full body and polished tannins. Style is like a Right Bank blend of Merlot with some Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc.”

90 points – Robert Parker - ” The 2014 Proprietary Red the Rescuer, which is 90% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot has more plumpness and richness, coming across like a Napa Pomerol with its mocha, black cherry and berry fruit. It has a nice plush palate, a medium to full-bodied mouthfeel and a sexy finish. “
