Mission Codename The Ponzo Scheme
Bulgarian winemaker, Miro Tcholakov, is a Wine Spies staple. We’ve been featuring his wines for more than a decade now, and we are just crazy bonkers for his wines. Where most young wines are undrinkable, somehow Miro manages to make big, complex wines that are ready to drink on release. Today’s is a juicy, dark marvel that we recommend very highly.
Bright red, almost crimson in the glass, it portends an intense drinking experience. That’s confirmed as soon as you smell it, with opulent notes of gingerbread, molasses, dark cherry, fig, and rhubarb. This tremendous wine comes through on the palate big time. Delicious flavors of plum, cherry, walnut, Chinese five-spice, dark chocolate, and vanilla. Wow. It packs an explosive, expansive mouthfeel that touches down in the center of the palate and radiates outward. This would go surprisingly well with pecan pie.
Miro is like some sort of wine wizard, crafting wines that are exceptional and ready to drink soon after bottling. How he achieves this must be magic. Enjoy now, or cellar a few bottles for the next few years. We’ll feel lucky if we can squirrel away some of this extremely food-friendly wine for the coming months.
Oh, what’s Miro’s Agent name, you ask? He gave himself the moniker, Agent KGB!
Cheers!
